The invention relates to an optical fiber presenting a core, cladding, and a grating written by irradiation and coupling at least one light mode into the cladding so that it is dissipated therein. The invention proposes causing the mean index to vary progressively along the grating, at least at the ends of the grating. The progressive variation in mean index or in the amplitude of index modulation for writing the grating serves to limit insertion losses to the filter formed by the grating. Analogously, in a written-in grating, the invention provides the equivalent of progressively varying the core size of the fiber for interconnecting two optical fibers presenting different core diameters. The invention is applicable in particular to gain-equalizing filters in WDM transmission systems.

Photosensitivity of an inner core which is disposed in a central portion of a core is low. Photosensitivity of an outer core which is disposed close to a cladding is high. In the cladding, photosensitivity of the inner cladding which is close to the core is high and photosensitivity of an outer cladding which is outside of the inner cladding is low. A plurality of slant optical fiber grating having different optical characteristics by using the optical fiber having such photosensitivity so as to form a gain equalizing optical filter. By doing this, it is possible to provide an optical filter having a slant optical fiber grating which can maintain a filtering characteristics in a narrow bandwidth and enlarge loss area.

An optical fiber comprises a core region, an inner cladding region, and an outer cladding region. Each of the core region and inner cladding region is doped with GeO2, whereas the inner cladding region is also doped with F element. The core region has a refractive index higher than each of the refractive index of the inner cladding region and the refractive index of the outer cladding region. Each of the core region and inner cladding region doped with GeO2 has a UV photosensitivity. The deviation in concentration distribution of GeO2 added to the inner cladding region is so small that the deviation in UV photosensitivity in the inner cladding region is null10% or less.

A single mode optical fiber, having a pure silica core and a cladding, and having a Bragg grating in along a length of some of the cladding, providing reflectivity in some of the cladding but not in the core, and a method for making same. Because the core is pure silica, it is unaffected by exposure to ultraviolet light, and so the process of imprinting a Bragg grating does not affect the refractive index of the core. The portion of the cladding in which the Bragg grating is to be imprinted is a glass containing an index-lowering dopant, such as fluorine, as well as a photosensitizing dopant, such as germanium. Exposure to ultraviolet light therefore forms a Bragg grating in a portion of the cladding, but not in the core, providing reflectivity in the cladding, but not in the core. A second portion of cladding can also be provided, surrounding the portion doped with the photosensitizing dopant. The second portion of cladding is an outer cladding, surrounding the doped portion, which abuts the core.

This invention provides an optical waveguide having diffraction gratings with sufficiently high reflectivity, a waveguide member for obtaining the optical waveguide, and a production process thereof. An optical waveguide in which desired diffraction gratings are formed in a core and in a cladding at a predetermined portion by using a waveguide member in which germanium dioxide is added in the core and in the cladding and irradiating the predetermined portion of the waveguide member with interference fringes of ultraviolet light. By this, the optical waveguide according to the present invention reflects guided light throughout the entire mode field region, thus having a high reflectivity.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber having a structure which allows further improvements to be made both in terms of lower reflectance and narrower bandwidth, and to a fiber grating type filter including the optical fiber. The optical fiber applied to the fiber grating type filter comprises a core region extending along a predetermined axis, and a cladding region provided on an outer periphery of the core region. The core region does not contain any photosensitive dopant which contributes to predetermined wavelength light photosensitivity as a glass property, but a part of the cladding region contain such a photosensitive dopant. By means of this composition, it is possible to form a grating, which has a grating plane slanted by a predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis, in a part of the cladding region surrounding the core region.

This photosensitivity profile W(r) is such that, for a given SBG writing angle θ, the coupling of the fundamental mode into itself as counterpropagation in the waveguide, K(θ), is substantially zero and such that its derivative K′(θ) with respect to the angle θ is also substantially equal to zero. The zero derivative, and also the zero coupling of the fundamental mode as a function of the angle, means that a widened reflection pocket about the grating write angle is guaranteed.
