An adapter is configured to hold a loose tube fiber cable and is mountable into a fusion splicer. The adapter includes a clamp base having a first and second grooves, each groove having a centerline, a width and a depth. The depth of the second groove is greater than the depth of the first groove, such that a shoulder is formed between the first and second grooves. The centerlines of the grooves align. This allows for the loose tube fiber cable or splice-on connector to be properly positioned within the grooves. The first groove is V-shaped. The second groove may be V-shaped, U-shaped or square-shaped. A clamp cover seats on the clamp base. The clamp cover has a compressible pad which, when the clamp cover is placed into a facing relationship with the clamp base, the pad aligns with the first groove.

In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, provided is an extremely compact, simple, and cost-effective approach for aligning optical fibers in an optical fiber fusion splicer. The basis of this alignment method is an “S”-Curve Piezo Bending Actuator. The device comprises a thin strip of elastically flexible material (such as spring steel, beryllium copper, or fiber reinforced polymer) that is coated in four areas with a piezoelectric material (such as barium titanate or other known compounds).

An apparatus for splicing optical fibers is arranged on a supporting plate in the form of a printed circuit board. The apparatus comprises a first optical fiber guide, which is arranged on a spring plate to displace a first optical fiber in the longitudinal direction, and a second optical fiber guide, which is arranged on a further spring plate to displace a second optical fiber in the longitudinal direction. The spring plates are arranged on a respectively bendable lever arm. The optical fibers which have been inserted in the optical fiber guides can be displaced in a lateral direction by bending the lever arms. The precision required for alignment of the optical fibers can be provided by stepping down the forces acting on the bending apparatuses.

A method for fusion-splicing optical fibers and a fusion splicer are provided, which enable preventing a fusion spliced portion from disconnecting when the optical fiber is removed from the fusion splicer. A fusion-splicing method for optical fibers comprises: holding optical fibers and on optical fiber holding parts respectively provided on a pair of movable stages; butting ends of optical fibers by bringing the pair of movable stages mutually closer; fusion-splicing butted optical fibers to form a fusion spliced portion S; carrying out a proof test, the proof test including applying a tension to the fusion spliced portion S by moving the pair of movable stages so as to distance them from each other; and bringing the pair of movable stages mutually closer by a predetermined distance upon completion of the proof test.

A method of fusion-splicing includes attaching a stab to a stub cap having a non-axisymmetric structure, positioning an embedded optical fiber to a fusion splicing working part by fixing the stub cap thereto; positioning an outside optical fiber to the fusion splicing working part; fusion-splicing the embedded optical fiber and the outside optical fiber; repositioning the embedded optical fiber to a reinforcing working part by fixing the stub cap thereto and repositioning the outside optical fiber to the reinforcing working part such that a relative positional relationship between the embedded optical fiber and the outside optical fiber becomes the same as that at the fusion splicing working part; and reinforcing a spliced portion between the embedded optical fiber and the outside optical fiber while a tension is applied to the embedded optical fiber and the outside optical fiber.

A fiber optic assembly includes first and second fiber optic ribbons and a splice protector. Each of the first and second fiber optic ribbons includes a plurality of optical fibers coupled in a substantially flat arrangement, where the optical fibers are aligned side-by-side with one another. The optical fibers of the first ribbon are fusion spliced with the optical fibers of the second ribbon such that the spliced ribbons at the splice have a common lengthwise axis, widthwise axis orthogonal to the lengthwise axis, and thickness axis orthogonal to the lengthwise and widthwise axes. The splice protector supports the optical fibers of the first and second fiber optic ribbons that are spliced to one another at the splice. The splice protector includes an ultra-violet light (UV-) curable adhesive that provides a flexible support for the splice, and is at least half as flexible when cured over the splice as the first and second ribbons in bending about the widthwise axis.

A splicing stage for fusion joining two optical fibers comprises an electric arc welding system, a clamping and fiber position adjustment system, and an optional imaging optical system. The stage is preferably incorporated in a compact, low profile, modular fusion splicing system that employs a local injection and detection system to optimally align and position the fibers before fusion. The system is rugged, portable, and capable of operating in an adverse environment. Compact and low in profile, the splicing stage and system are operable with minimal clearance to adjacent equipment and structures and with only a minimal amount of free fiber slack available. Simplicity of design and operation enable accurate alignment and reproducible formation of low transmission loss spliced joints.

A pair of guides having long grooves on the upper surfaces thereof for engaging optical fibers, a pair of fulcra formed in parallel with the long grooves of the guides for supporting the guides, a pair of centering stands having substrates for supporting the fulcra, a pair of centering mechanisms having load imparting mechanism sections having telescopic output ends, load imparting mechanism sections, and transmitting mechanism sections for the adjusting mechanism sections so that the long grooves of said centering stands are disposed adjacent to each other to align in a rectilinear line. The centering mechanisms are associated with the centering stands to contact the output ends of the centering mechanisms with the guides of the centering stands.
