A color image forming method is disclosed, comprising exposing a silver halide color photographic material and developing the exposed photographic material at 43 to 180° C. to form a color image, wherein at least one light-sensitive layer comprising a silver halide emulsion comprising tabular silver halide grains having an average aspect ratio of at least 8. There is also disclosed a digital image forming process, wherein image recording information of the photographic material which was formed by use of the color image forming method is coverted to digital image information through an image sensor.

A method is disclosed to prepare a light-sensitive regular silver bromide or silver bromoiodide emulsion, wherein said method comprises the following the steps:precipitating silver bromide or silver bromoiodide by means of the double-jet or triple-jet technique in colloidal silica having a particle size from 0.003 .mu.m to 0.30 .mu.m as a protective colloid in the absence of any polymeric compound(s) comprising gelatin or its derivatives capable of forming hydrogen bridges with colloidal silica, except for polythioether compounds, but always in the presence of an onium compound, except for an ammonium compound, wherein the ratio by weight of said colloidal silica to the said onium compound(s) is between 3 and 30, and, optionally, in the presence of a crystal growth modifier,controlling the nucleation and growth steps by means of variable flow rate(s) of the aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and halide salts and/or by means of constant pAg-values during the said steps in the vessel in order to determine the number of nuclei quantitatively in the nucleation step and to avoid renucleation in the growth step,desalting the reaction medium and redispersing the silver halide,chemically ripening the silver halide crystals andadjusting the ratio by weight of the colloidal silica sol to the amount of silver halide, expressed as the equivalent amount of silver nitrate to a value of at least 0.03 at every moment throughout the precipitation stage.

A method is disclosed for the preparation of silver halide tabular emulsion grains, containing at least 75% chloride, wherein at least 50% of the total projected area of all the grains is provided by said tabular grains, and wherein said tabular grains exhibit an average aspect ratio of at least 5:1, an average thickness not greater than 0.5 micron and an average diameter of at least 0.6 micron, by a process comprising the following steps:(1) preparing a dispersion medium containing a gelatino-peptizer, and performing the precipitation of the silver halide grains under the following conditions:(a) the chloride ion concentration in the dispersion medium is lower than 0.15 molar at the start of the precipitation and remains lower than 0.15 molar during the whole precipitation, and pH is maintained between 5.0 and 9.0;(b) the precipitation is performed in the presence of a crystal habit modifyer according to general formula Ia or Ib: ##STR1## wherein Z represents the atoms necessary to form a fused on aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic, unsubstituted or substituted ring, e.g. substituted with alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, hydroxy, mercapto, carboxy, amino or halogen, andR is hydrogen or a substituent as defined for ring Z; n is 1 or 0, andQ represents carbon in which case n=1, or Q represents nitrogen, in which latter case n=0.This crystal habit modifier can be added a several different stages of the precipitation. An improved silver halide precipitation process of preparing a dispersion of silver halide grains is disclosed. The process comprises forming a radiation-sensitive silver halide dispersion by reacting silver and halide salts in solution within a dispersing medium to form silver halide grain nuclei within the dispersing medium and allowing silver halide grain growth to occur in a reaction vessel in which the silver halide grain nuclei and the dispersing medium are present. The improvement comprises, during silver halide grain growth, withdrawing a portion of the dispersing medium from the reaction vessel through an ultrafiltration membrane while retaining the silver halide grains within the dispersing medium remaining within the reaction vessel.

A series of continuous operations are performed at least once that when an amount of formation reaches the desired production amount, the cooled mother liquor is ultra-filtrated in the third line to eliminate, to dehydrate, and to concentrate unnecessary salt generated in the formation reaction, and the mother liquor after ultra-filtrated and an addition liquid containing silver halide ultrafine grains prepared in the second line are instantaneously mixed continuously to grow the silver halide grain nuclei.
