摘要:
Method and apparatus for applying one or a plurality of superimposed layers of a photographic coating composition by the curtain coating method onto a moving support. The spacing between the edge guides, used to maintain the width of a curtain throughout its free fall from the coating hopper to the impingement line on the support, is arranged to coat less than the width of the support so as to provide an uncoated margin on the support. The curtain fluids are extracted from the edge region of the falling curtain by connecting a suction device to the edge guides near the point of impingement of the falling curtain, thus substantially reducing the thickness of the curtain at its edge region and thereby reducing the thickness of the coated edges.

In the manufacture of photographic elements, such as photographic film or paper, the support is coated by forming a free-falling vertical curtain of liquid photographic coating composition in such manner that the curtain is stable and has a uniform flow rate across its width and directing the support so that the free-falling curtain impinges thereon, while maintaining a controlled relation between the flow rate and the speed at which the support is moved, to form a thin layer of the coating composition on the face of the support. Apparatus which is particularly advantageous for carrying out this method includes means for advancing the support at the desired speed and a hopper for the coating composition which is provided with a downwardly inclined slide surface down which the coating composition flows by gravity, the slide surface terminating in a lip spaced vertically above the moving support from which the coating composition flows as a free-falling curtain.

A pouring head is arranged above a conveyer belt which carries objects to be coated with a coating material being poured from the pouring head in the form of a curtain extending transversely to the direction of travel of the belt. In order to limit the free falling curtain on both sides two rim severing organs are provided on each side of the curtain, one organ above the other, as well as curtain edge-guiding means, one for each severing organ, which are arranged each adjacent the severing organ to which it pertains. The lower severing organs are arranged a short distance above the conveyer belt. The two severing organs comprise blades for cutting off marginal strips from the falling curtain in two successive stages, thus reducing the width of the curtain to a desired size. The lower severing organ serves mainly to cut off the rim bead being conventionally produced on the curtain where it slides downward on the curtain guiding means, thus preventing the occurrence of undesirably thick marginal zones in the coatings produced on the objects being moved underneath the pouring head by the conveyer belt.

An apparatus for curtain coating is provided wherein a falling curtain of coating liquid is formed by causing coating liquid to flow as a layer down an inclined surface of a slide hopper, the inclined surface terminating in a lip and the coating liquid beginning its fall after flowing over the lip on to a travelling web positioned beneath the slide hopper and being coated thereon as a layer. The slide hopper is provided with two vertical edge guiding plates extending parallel to the direction of web motion and being of such width to allow the curtain edge to follow its natural inflected path. Preferably the edge guiding plates are composed of an easily wettable material, particularly polymethymethacrylate.

In a method of coating a support with a liquid coating composition in which the coating composition is applied by impingement of a free-falling curtain of coating composition onto the surface of the moving support, formation of edge beads along the edges of the coating which are of greater thickness than the remainder of the coating is effectively avoided by use of laterally adjustable edge guides which are initially positioned so as to establish a stable free-falling curtain and then moved laterally to a position in which they are slightly further apart, whereby the coating assumes a uniform thickness. The method of this invention is useful in both single-layer and multiple-layer curtain coating and are especially advantageous in the manufacture of photographic film and photographic paper in view of the need for precisely uniform thickness over the entire coated area.

A film applying method in which a coating solution is applied by a solution injector having an edge guide onto a support member as a freely falling coating film, includes forming a solution contact surface of the edge guide to have one of a radius greater than 1.0 mm or a width d greater than 0.7 mm when the coating solution has at least one of a viscosity greater than 45 cp and a dynamic surface tension difference greater than 8 dyne/cm. The edge guide solution contacting surface is narrowed to have a radius less than 1.0 mm or a width d less than 0.7 mm when the coating solution has at least one of a viscosity less than 45 cp and a dynamic surface tension difference less than 8. In a second embodiment, the coating solution is prepared to have at least one of a viscosity greater than 45 cp and a dynamic surface tension difference greater than 8 dyne/cm when the solution contacting part of the edge guide has either a radius r greater than 1.0 mm or a width d greater than 0.7 mm. Alternatively, the coating solution is prepared to have at least one of a viscosity less than 45 cp and a dynamic surface tension difference less than 8 dyne/cm when the solution contacting part of the edge guide has either a radius r less than 1.0 mm or a width d less than 0.7 mm.
