A CNC machine tool control system that includes a controllable, movable tool for shaping a workpiece, a mechanism for receiving control instructions describing shaping functions to be performed on the workpiece, a processing unit and memory. The control systems includes objects defined according to an object oriented design. One type of object is a model of a shaping process to be performed on a workpiece, including informational parameters regarding the physical dimensions of the shape resulting from the process. The process objects communicates through an object oriented messaging system to machine objects, which represent physical devices present on the CNC machine on which the control system operates. The system also includes object oriented motion control and exception handler objects, each of which may communication with other object via object oriented messages. The control system permits easy modifications to the control system by persons with limited knowledge about the entire control system, and is readily adaptable to advances in new CNC machine tools.

Factory machines such as CNC machine tools, co-ordinate measuring machines and industrial robots are connected in a local area network. Each machine controller is interfaced to the network via a communications adaptor which translates data, commands and programs between the Manufacturing Automation Protocal used by the network and the necessary machine-specific format. The communications adaptors are microprocessor-based and have additional input/output ports for controlling probes, other sensors such as temperature sensors and workpiece presence sensors, peripheral devices such as conveyors, and the "electronic handwheel" inputs of the machine controller. Controlling such devices from a program run in the communications adaptor rather than from the machine controller or from a computer on the network gives greater power, flexibility, convenience and potential for real-time control.

Each of these servers (52, 54, 56, and 58) allows external programs (60) running on the host and view node computers (12, 40, and 44) to access power management data from the various devices (26) in the power management control system (10). Modbus server (52) allows external programs (60) to access power management data from devices (26), which communicate using the Modbus protocol. MMS server (56) allows external programs (60) to access power management data from MMS/UCA2 compliant devices (34), which communicate using the MMS protocol. Ethernet server (52) provides for network layer TCP/IP encapsulation for communications over Ethernet networks (20) and (22). Third party server (58) allows communications between external programs (60) and device (38), which uses any proprietary protocol. Power management control system (10) implements the UCA Version 2 architecture, having an Ethernet physical layer, a Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network layer, and a Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) application layer.

In an automated factory environment which uses a plurality of stations, each having a communication device that incorporates the Manufacturing Message Specification (MSS) and is joined with other stations in a network that provides for communication using the Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP) communication, a method and apparatus for permitting programmed control of the plurality of stations on the basis of user-defined named variables, rather than specific vendor-defined device addresses is provided. A conversion table that has registered therein a correspondence between the named variable and an address for a specific device is used for control and communication. The table is loaded with appropriate address and named variable information by use of conventional program loading services provided in the MSS standard. The input may be from a remote station, from a management terminal or from a Factory Automation (FA) device.
