It also includes a cartridge replacement input device for inputting the tool identification information to the control apparatus. The control apparatus has an identification device for using the input tool identification information to identify the tool information on the plurality of tools stored in the tool information storage device.

Second, spatial locations are matched against a user-specified library of reconfigurable clamps to synthesize a valid fixture layout or configuration that includes clamps that are accessible and collision free. The spatial locations matching during the second stage can be the same spatial locations chosen in the first stage to ensure immobility, or a different set of spatial locations.

3-D models of various types of objects such as a robot body, and a peripheral equipment, a machine, a part (workpiece), of the robot, are stored in an object library in advance. Dimension line data of an edge line of which dimension can be changed, and constraint condition for constraining coordinate positions of apexes which can be changed are also stored in the object library. A model having the shape corresponding to the shape of the object to be used is selected from the object library, and the dimension of the shape is set. The dimension of the selected model is modified so that the shape of the model corresponds to the shape of the actual object. Using the model of which dimension was adjusted, animation motion of the robot is formed on a display screen. With the above arrangement, it is possible to easily set and change object 3-D models relating to a robot motion.

A system and method for constructing fixtures for holding physical parts for welding, checking, inspection, and other related activities is provided. The physical parts include parts of cars as may appear in an automotive plant. The optimum L-unit components are selected based on the contour of the part to be held, the principle locating points for the part, and the geometry of the various L-unit components. The principle locating points identify where on the part is a L-unit fixture to be placed. The program reads the part contour data and principle locating points data to construct the criteria by which to select the optimum L-unit components from a relational database. The program allows the user to preselect a L-unit component and then determine the other fixture components needed to adequately hold the part. Also provided for are multiple L-unit types including rest, pin, and clamp L-units, as well as combinations of the L-unit types.
