A microfilm searching and reading device for selectively taking out a cartridge containing a target image from one or more microfilm cartridge stacks. The device comprises a framework defining at least one storing space extending substantially vertically for storing a stack of cartridges in a manner such that the cartridges are stacked one above another, a scanner for receiving a selected microfilm cartridge and having an image reader and an actuator for winding and rewinding the microfilm, a carrier for taking out the selected cartridge and for guiding the same to the scanner, and a restoring mechanism for putting the selected cartridge, after the target image has been read by the microfilm reader, in the lowermost or uppermost position of the storing space. The device further comprises a memory for storing the location of the restored cartridge, and a controller for controlling the carrier, the scanner and the restoring mechanism. The device of the invention is small in size and capable of searching and taking out a desired microfilm cartridge within a short access time. Also, the device can be readily adapted for change in system scale.

An image locater is provided for causing relative movement between the optical image sensing means and the film so that a specific image carrier by the film can be viewed. The image sensor senses a plurality of images simultaneously and provides an analog output. A processor is provided for processing the analog output to provide a digital output which can be utilized for providing a visual image.

The present invention relates to a method of stopping a film containing a plural number of frames having images recorded thereon. First and second detectors each having at least one photo-electric transducer element are arranged along the feed path of the film. The first and second detectors are disposed in such a manner that when the first detector receives the light from the frame, the second detector receives the light from the blank portion (non-image portion) between frames. A signal is produced only when the first detector detects a desired frame and the second detector detects the blank portion at the same time during the feeding of the film. After the generation of the signal, the film is further advanced in a determined direction by a determined length of the film and then the film feeding is stopped to stop the desired frame in the film at a determined position.

An automatic high speed microfilm searching system is disclosed for locating a desired frame of microfilm. Each frame consists of information data and index data. The index data comprises a sequence of vertically-aligned data bar groups, each representing a half character of a sequence of characters of a unique index code for the associated frame. A pair of synchronization bars, each half the width of a data bar, is vertically aligned with each data bar group. Additional synchronization pulses both precede and follow the data bar groups. Depending on which direction the microfilm is moving, the leading synchronization bars are sensed by a bar sensing unit on the left or on the right of the viewing screen. Each sensing bar unit comprises a plurality of vertically-aligned data bar sensors and synchronization bar sensors, with three sensors assigned to each vertical bar in a data bar group, and three sensors assigned to reading the synchronization bars. If the data bars are centrally located each of the three synchronization bar sensors senses the leading synchronization bar; if the data bars are high, only one or two of the central and high synchronization bar sensors senses the leading synchronization bar; if the data bars are low, only one or two of the central and low synchronization bar sensors senses the leading synchronization bar. A bar position determining means is responsive to the three synchronization bar sensors to determine whether the data bars are high, centrally positioned or low. The transition between synchronization bar pairs is used to latch the correctly-read character data into storage. After two half characters are stored they are transferred to a computer for comparison with the desired frame index code. When the available frame index code corresponds with the desired frame index code, the microfilm is stopped to project the desired frame onto the viewing screen.

An information storage and retrieval system is provided in which document information, such as images of documents and the like, is recorded on film strip disposed in magazines. Selective monitoring of individual image frames is effected by means of an electro-mechanical system in which selected film strip magazines and an electro-optical scanning device are selectively prepositioned with respect to each other and mechanical coupling is effected between a motor operated drive means and the film strip of the selected magazine, which is thereafter driven past the electro-optical scanning means until the selected image frame of the film strip is aligned with the scanning means. Information contained in the selected frame is then visually monitored and if it is desired to provide a hard copy thereof, a copy producing device is provided to generate a print.
