    摘要： An apparatus and method are provided for automatically positioning a scanning device such as a video camera at selected locations of a substantial area of operation to permit the scanning device to selectively scan different phenomena within the realm of the different areas which may be scanned thereby. In one form, the scanning device is supported by a carriage which is movable along a trackway and is automatically or remotely controlled in its operation. The scanning device is also movable on a fixture which is secured to the carriage so that it may be predeterminately located at different distances from the carriage to scan along different paths of locations. The system includes one or more monitor stations containing receivers of the signals generated by the scanning device and respective viewing screens on which the scanned phenomenon may be displayed. Recording means is also provided which is selectively operably to permit the recording of signals of the scanned phenomena, which signals may be later monitored or analyzed. When it is desired to have a hard copy of the recorded information, a suitable camera or other form of reproduction means is provided which is operable to print copy by the person at the monitor station. In a particular form, the phenomena scanned comprise a plurality of record units or record tracks each containing plural recordings which may be separately and selectively scanned with the scanned information being remotely monitorable and recordable. Control of the operation of the scanner and its conveyance is effected either by automatic means or by remotely generated control signals which are generated by an operator''s selective operation of switches.

    摘要： A record system and method for recording and reproducing information relative to record cards is provided wherein the information is in the form of optically scannable parallel tracks containing recordings therein which are defined by variations in the surface topography of the record tracks. A narrow beam of radiation such as that generated by a laser or an electron beam gun is modulated with information such as a video picture signal or digital information and is caused to scan the surface of a record card to generate either a variable topography represented by variations in the widths and/or depths of the narrow recording area of a record track caused by variations in the intensity of the beam of radiation as the beam is deflected to scan the recording track or the card is automatically moved to effect scanning by the beam. The beam may be operable to vaporize or otherwise variably erode and cause a groove or a series of cavities to be formed along the record track wherein the shape and/or depth of the cavities or separations therein represent electro-optically scannable information such as full-frame video picture signals, digital information and the like. In another form, the card may be coated with an erodable material which is vaporized or otherwise eroded to effect information recordings therein.

    摘要： An apparatus and method for reproducing information recorded on magnetic tapes stored in a plurality of cartridges for the purpose of displaying or otherwise utilizing said information. In one form the cartridges are disposed side-by-side on a retainer which is moved with respect to a transducer to align a selected cartridge with said transducer to permit the transducing of information relative to the tape of the selected cartridge. In another form the transducer is moved past an array of cartridges and is stopped in alignment with a selected cartridge after which operative coupling is effected between the transducer and the tape of the selected cartridge. In a third form, both the array of cartridges and transducer are moved. Means are also provided for coupling a drive means associated with the transducer to a selected tape cartridge upon alignment of the two, to effect movement of the tape in the cartridge past the transducer for scanning selected portions of the tape. The apparatus also includes remote control and automatic control elements for the means selectively positioning the cartridges and transducer and driving the tape in the selected cartridges. In yet another form, cartridges are provided which are totally enclosed to protect the tape therein and an access door is opened to the cartridge upon aligning and coupling a selected cartridge and the transducer.

    摘要： An information storage and reproduction apparatus is provided in which information such as picture information is stored on a plurality of record members and selectively scanned to generate images in viewable or monitorable form. In one form of the invention, the information is provided on filmstrip as images and a scanning apparatus therefore is remotely controlled to selectively scan the recordings and generate images on a viewing screen located remote from the record members. In another form of the invention, the information is recorded as signals defined by variable magnetic recordings in different magnetic recording members and a scanning apparatus is provided in the form of magnetic transducing means which is selectively conveyed to selected magazines containing the record members having different picture signals recorded thereon. The conveying means may be utilized to both scan and drive the record member to generate picture signals. In yet another form of the invention, magnetic recordings of video picture signals are provided on a plurality of magnetic cards which are selectively scanned to generate reproductions of the video picture signals which are presented to a monitoring apparatus and utilized to generate still images on the viewing screen thereof.

    摘要： A data storage and retrieval device utilizes a data cartridge recording and playback apparatus and has storage magazines for holding a plurality of data cartridges for use by the recording and playback apparatus. A cartridge shuttle moves the data cartridges between the recording and playback apparatus and the storage magazines. The cartridge shuttle has a translation drive for moving the shuttle and the cartridges held therein along a translation space within the data storage and retrieval device. The shuttle also has an elevator for lifting and lowering the cartridges, a rotation apparatus to rotate the cartridges, and a cartridge gripper to move the cartridges into and out of the rotation apparatus.
