A signature capture device includes a CPU that executes a routine to losslessly compress signature data in realtime such that decompression recovers a legally acceptable replica of the original signature. Digital data representing the pixel start point of a signature run is stored in preferably 10-bit or 9-bit format, and is then reduced to a common lower format of 9-bit or 8-bits. Subsequent data points within a run are reduced to the same common lower format and are compared to the common lower format version of the start point data. The differential between the start point and the adjacent second point is calculated and encoded with 4-bits if possible, or with 8-bits otherwise. The differential between the third point and second point is calculated and encoded with 4-bits or 8-bits, as required, and so on, within the run. A run is initiated by a pen-down status, or if a present run exceeds a predetermined length, or if a differential can no longer be encoded with 4-bits and requires 8-bit encoding. For each run, the start position and differential pixel positions are encoded with a preferably 32-bit start block the provides pen-up and pen-down status (1-bit), run length (10 bit), encoding 4-bit or 8-bit status (1-bit) and up to 10 bits each for initial x and y pixel position. The routine is stored in device ROM or as firmware, and incoming data is CPU processed and stored in RAM for export as a compressed data stream.

A major problem in automatic signature verification is the rejection of true signatures. One way of capturing a signature is to use a special pen 10 to write on an area 13 having horizontal lines, the pen being constructed to pass a signal to a computer 11 indicating whether the pen tip is in contact with the area 13 and when the lines in the area 13 are crossed. Signals characteristic of signatures derived in this way are analyzed and stored. To enable verification to be carried out a number of authentic signatures are analyzed and a number of measures such as means and standard deviations of signature features are determined and stored. When a trial signature is to be verified, the same features of the trial signature are measured and the results are compared with the stored measures. It has been discovered that many false rejections of true signatures are due to variations of certain types such as hesitations which occur when the pen tip is off the writing area between inked segments of the signature. The method of the invention allows for such time variations by, for example, modifying the measurements obtained from the trial signature to remove the effect of these variations if a rejection occurs and then comparing the modified measurements with the stored measurements to determine whether the trial signature can now be accepted.

A method and a system for fingerprinting signatures and enhanced signature capturing for charge card transactions on mobile communication devices identify and transform a signature into a normalized representation such as a bytestream including coordinate data and combine the normalized representation with some transaction information into combined data. The combined data is further transformed into fixed length data stored for further analyses or uses. Upon the receipt of a dispute, the stored representation(s) of the signature and some of the stored transaction information of the transaction in dispute may be transformed into a first fixed length data. The first fixed length data may be further compared with the stored fixed length data obtained at the time of the transaction to resolve the dispute. The representations of signatures of multiple transactions may be used to determine whether these multiple transactions belong to the same category or to different categories.
