A system and method for handling audio input/output data translates audio message in a first format from an audio application resident in a virtual machine to an audio voice in a second format which may have no exact match for the original audio message. The invention is used for audio applications which directly write to a particular hardware register of a particular audio card to communicate with an audio card which operates according to completely different principles. The translating program intercepts the audio message written in the first format including a first plurality of audio parameters, compares the audio parameters to those corresponding to a table of audio voices and selects the audio voice which corresponds to a match of the audio parameters in the audio message. If there is no exact match in the table, a variety of techniques are provided to calculate the closest or at least an acceptable audio voice for the original audio message. In one preferred embodiment, the audio parameters are a plurality of FM synthesis parameters and the audio voices are a set of generalized MIDI voices.

An electronic circuit triggered by pulses derived from the rhythm pattern generator of an electronic organ simulates the sound of a group of people clapping hands by producing in bursts at least two different sound signals of differing characteristics and combining the signal bursts in a predetermined pattern which causes them to occur in close time proximity to each other but not at the same time. When the combined signal is acoustically reproduced, the resulting sound is simulative of that produced by a group of people clapping their hands in unison.

An audio apparatus is suitable for generating crowd sounds from an audio signal is disclosed in which the apparatus comprises modulation means operable to modulate a noise signal in response to the audio signal to generate a modulated noise signal, and diffusion delay means. The diffusion delay means is operable to apply a series of two or more delay operations, the input signal to a first such delay operation in the series being the modulated noise signal, and input to each subsequent delay operation in the series being the output signal generated by a preceding delay operation. Each delay operation comprises modifying that operation's input signal by the addition of a delayed version of that operation's input signal.

Several short segments of an otherwise continuous sound are recorded and stored in a digital memory. The stored segments are concatenated together to form a sound sequence of arbitrary length, based on selecting the next sound segment according to some statistical algorithm. The selected algorithm may be simply a random or pseudo-random selection, or it may provide a probability weighting to emphasize some sound records over others, or some combination of factors also affected by external stimuli such as light, heat or operator input. Apparatus for generating random sequenced digital sound are disclosed. Another aspect of the invention is logical sequence sound in which the selection of sound segments proceeds according to a logical sequence which is programmable.

A model railroad cattle car sound effects system includes a speech synthesis circuit (FIG. 6) for "playing" selected cow voices stored as digital data in an EPROM (160). In a random mode of operation, a state generator (30) provides a pseudo-random count that is used to select among four different calm cow voices, one of which is silence. The resulting audio output is perceived as random contented cow sounds. A pendulum motion detector (FIG. 8) provides an indication of lateral motion of the system. An up/down motion counter (40) maintains a motion count reflecting the level of excitation of the system (and the cows). The motion counter increments responsive to motion, and decrements gradually in the absence of detected motion. A motion count of at least four invokes a triggered mode of operation, in which the counter output is used to select among four different excited cow voices. The resulting audio output imitates increasingly agitated cows as the motion count further increases.

An applause device including a sound generator capable of generating at least one applause sound. The sound generator preferably can generate at least one sound which can indicate approval or disapproval, such as clapping, hollering, whistling, booing, and hissing. A switch permits the user to select between each of the sounds. The device also preferably comprises illumination structure so as to illuminate at least a portion of the sound generation device. In a preferred embodiment, the applause device is shaped substantially, at least in part, in the shape of an open hand. A method for generating applause sounds and a system for remotely controlling the applause device is also disclosed.

An interactive electronic drum system and training techniques suitable for use in a coin-operated environment such as an arcade are described. Electronic drum pads, audio speakers, a visual display, training lights and an overall control system are combined to simulate the excitement of a live drum or interactive musical jam session for a user. Positive feedback and, as necessary, instructive aid are provided to make the experience a positive one for both the novice and the expert player. Learning and playing a musical instrument becomes an intuitive, exciting experience and not a boring chore to be endured. Players can simulate the experience of playing in a rock band before a live and appreciative audience. In short, this interactive electronic drum system makes drums and the jamming experience widely accessible to the public.

A pattern memory stores plural accompaniment patterns for each of plural accompaniment components, and each of the accompaniment components is composed of one or more musical instrument parts. An operator is provided for selecting a desired accompaniment pattern for each of the components, and the accompaniment patterns correspond, in accordance with a predetermined rule, to different possible manners in which the operator is actuated, so that a specific accompaniment pattern corresponding to a manner in which the operator is actually actuated. A new accompaniment pattern is registered into the pattern memory in accordance with the predetermined rule. Information indicative of the predetermined rule may be shown on a display. The pattern memory may store accompaniment patterns for each of plural different accompaniment styles, and specific accompaniment patterns may by shared between the accompaniment styles. There are proposed various variations to select a desired accompaniment pattern for each accompaniment component. Further, it is also possible to selectively read out a predetermined part of a specific accompaniment pattern and to set such a condition to prevent a specific accompaniment from being read out. Moreover, it is possible to read out a specific accompaniment pattern which satisfies a predetermined retrieval condition or which is close to a desired accompaniment pattern. It is also possible to read out plural accompaniment patterns in sequence for sequential reproductive performance.
