Abstract: An acoustofluidic device includes a substrate and an ultrasound transducer contacting the substrate. The substrate and the transducer combined have a set of acoustic natural system resonances determined by the material and the dimensions of the substrate and the transducer. Each system resonance has a resonance frequency and a resonance quality factor. A microfluidic cavity is provided in the substrate to contain a fluid, the cavity having a set of acoustic natural cavity resonances, each having a resonance frequency and a resonance quality factor, determined by the dimensions of the cavity and the speed of sound in a fluid to be contained in the cavity. The material and the dimensions of the substrate and the transducer are selected so that at least one individual cavity resonance has a resonance frequency corresponding to the frequency of a minimum in an impedance spectrum of the transducer.

Abstract: An acoustofluidic device is provided comprising a) a substrate, and b) an ultrasound transducer attached to, or in contact with, the substrate. The substrate and the ultrasound transducer combined have a first set of acoustic natural system resonances determined by the material and the dimensions of the substrate and ultrasound transducer. Each system resonance comprises a resonance frequency and a resonance quality factor. The device further comprises c) a microfluidic cavity provided in the substrate and containing a fluid, the cavity having a second set of acoustic natural cavity resonances, each having a resonance frequency and a resonance quality factor, determined by the dimensions of the cavity and the speed of sound in the fluid. The material and the dimensions of the substrate and ultrasound transducer are selected so that at least one individual cavity resonance has a resonance frequency corresponding to the frequency of a minimum in an impedance spectrum of the ultrasound transducer. Method of producing the acoustofluidic device, as well as method of tracking a resonance frequency and performing an acoustofluidic operation are also provided.

Abstract: In a structure for mounting resonators to a duct, the duct including openings is provided with a plurality of duct-side mounting pieces, and the resonators formed separately from the duct and including communication ports coupled to the openings are provided with a plurality of resonator-side mounting pieces that are mounted to the duct-side mounting pieces. Coupling portions of the duct and the resonators are configured to ensure turning the resonators when the resonators are mounted to the duct. On the plurality of duct-side mounting pieces disposed with intervals in a peripheral direction of the coupling portions, mounting surfaces are formed to be opposed to turning directions of the resonators when mounting the resonators to the duct, the resonator-side mounting pieces being abutted against and mounted to the mounting surfaces. Accordingly, it is possible to turn the resonators when mounting them to the duct and improve attachment work.

Abstract: An acoustic lens or diffractive acoustic device, including but not limited to, a sub-wavelength thickness lens or diffuser, comprising an array of Helmholtz resonators (HRs) that provide perfect or near-perfect sound transmission through a rigid barrier. HRs are arranged in a line or an array confined within a waveguide and oriented so that one neck protrudes onto each side of the barrier. Extraordinary acoustic transmission (EAT) occurs when radiation (such as EM or acoustic radiation) incident on the barrier perforated with sub-wavelength holes is transmitted at a rate higher than expected based on the areal coverage fraction of the holes. Transmission is independent of the direction of sound on the barrier and the relative placement of the necks.

Abstract: This disclosure provides for an auditory modification apparatus to facilitate extraction of information from an auditory observation stream. The approach may be used to reveal features about the environment, or to simplify processing of the incoming audio stream. The apparatus acts on the incoming auditory stream by nature of its shape, and that shape either is passively static or actively manipulated. Preferably, the apparatus has given shape characteristics to reveal features of the environment, such as directionality of a noise, size of an enclosed space, or materials of its construction, that are not otherwise detectable or easy to process with conventional approaches. Further advantage exists in the notion of actively manipulating the shape of the apparatus in conjunction with its operation to facilitate information extraction in a dynamic manner.
