    摘要: The optical disc apparatus of this invention includes: an optical pickup, which irradiates an optical disc with a light beam and generates a light detection signal based on the beam reflected from the disc; a search section, which controls the pickup before data is written on a storage area of the disc, thereby adjusting the beam spot location and searching a reference one of information layers stacked for a defective area in the storage area of the disc; a defect decision section for detecting an error based on the detection signal and determining a portion of the storage area, where the error has occurred, as the defective area; a defect size measuring section for measuring the size of the defective area in an area of the reference layer and generating a defect information list indicating there is the defective area in the area of the reference layer; and a recording range control section for managing, by reference to the list, the storage area such that no data will be written on a perpendicularly projected area defined by projecting the defective area of the reference layer perpendicularly to another information layer.

    摘要: A recording medium includes a plurality of signal recording layers. A head reproduces two information signals from respective places in the recording medium on a time sharing basis. The reproduced signals are stored in a buffer memory before being outputted therefrom at first and second transfer rates respectively. The reproduced signals are transmitted from the head to the buffer memory on a time sharing basis and at a third transfer rate higher than the first and second transfer rates. Information amounts of the respective reproduced signals continuously transmitted from the head to the buffer memory are decided on the basis of a given relation among parameters including intra-layer seek times and inter-layer seek times related to the head, and the first, second, and third transfer rates.

    摘要: A method for extra appending data in a multiple layer disc is provided. The capacity of the data zone in the multiple layer disc is fixed, and each layer comprises a plurality of appended sessions. When multiple layer disc is mounted, it is determined whether data is appended in zones following a middle zone. If the data is appended in the zones following the middle zone, a first jump address is obtained from a table of extended contents to serve a start address of appending the data. Data is appended to the multiple layer disc. An end address of appending the data is recorded in the table of extended contents to serve a second jump address for a next appending operation.
