An improved vacuum interrupter is disclosed. The vacuum interrupter includes a ring-shaped structure placed between a contact support structure and an electrical contact associated with the contact support structure. A resistivity of the ring-shaped structure is higher than that of the contact support structure, so that current traversing the ring-shaped structure on its way from the contact support structure to the electrical contact is evenly distributed. The ring-shaped structure may be fit into an end portion of the contact support structure, the end portion having an diameter less than an outer diameter of the support structure, but greater than an inner diameter of the support structure. Alternatively, the end portion may be used without the ring-shaped portion, in which case the electrical contact may be shaped to fit into the end portion.

The flux density Bct is adjusted within the range A of 0.75 to 0.9 times greater than the axial flux density Bcr which gives the lowest arc voltage between the electrodes against each breaking current. The axial flux density monotonously increases from the center to the circumferential area of the electrode. Here, the radial position where the axial flux density Bcr which gives the lowest arc voltage Vmin is adjusted within the region B of 20% to 40% of the radius of the electrode. The axial flux density is made monotonously increase in an outer area from the region B and give the maximum value Bp in a circumferential area equal to or beyond 70% of the radius of the electrode. The maximum value Bp is adjusted within the range C of 1.4 to 2.4 times greater than the flux density Bct given at the electrode center. Further, the circumferential distribution of flux density passing the radial position where the axial flux density gives the maximum value is made fluctuate high and low. The circumferential distribution of flux density is adjusted to give at least two peaks on the circle. Here, the greatest value Bmax and the smallest value Bmin in the circumferential distribution of flux density are adjusted within the range of 1.4 to 2.4 times greater than the axial flux density Bct of the electrode center.

The current lead comprises a core and a jacket surrounding the core. The core is made of a material with low electric conductivity compared to the jacket and has a helical outer contour. The core can be made by twisting a rod of polygonal or star-shaped cross section. A jacket of a material with relatively high electrical conductivity and with a smooth cylindrical outer contour is applied to the core. The jacket is joined to the core firmly without space between them or is made in one piece with the core.

A vacuum type circuit interrupter is provided with contacts which include an integral axial magnetic field generating means. In one embodiment, a disc-like contacting portion is supported from the contact base, with a pair of half-turn conductive coil pieces extending between the base and the disc-like contacting portion. In another embodiment, the contacts have a cup-shaped base portion with a radially inwardly directed lip portion at the end of the cup-shaped portion to serve as the normal current carrying contact when the contacts are closed. The lip portions of these cup-shaped contacts are parted when the contacts are moved to the open position and the initial arc travels in a circular path around the annular lip. An auxiliary recessed disc-like contact portion is provided within the space defined by the cup-shaped base contact portion. The disc-like contact portion is supported from the base portion, and half-turn conductive coil pieces extend between the disc-like portion and the base portion of the contact so that an axial magnetic field may be generated when the contacts are in the open position.

A design for a winding is based on a material of low electrical resistance, such as copper, and of a diameter typically greater than 90 mm, intended to generate a magnetic field in an electrical contact for a medium voltage vacuum circuit-breaker. The winding includes a hollow cylinder including helical slots that are empty of material, arranged in parallel around its longitudinal axis, and that open out both to the hollow and to the outside of the cylinder. The angular length of each helical slot is equal to at least 360°. The design makes it possible to increase the level of the axial magnetic field (AMF) obtained by the winding(s) incorporated into an electrical contact of a vacuum circuit-breaker while improving uniformity, symmetry of the field, and production cost.
