Electrons emitted from a photocathode in response to incident X-rays are accelerated and focused onto a microchannel plate (MCP). The electrons multiplied by the MCP are converted into a visible light image by a phosphor screen. An envelope tube is curved at a halfway portion, and the electrons are deflected by a deflection coil so as to travel along the curved envelope tube and enter the MCP. Even if X-rays are transmitted from the photocathode, they do not enter the MCP directly and hardly contribute to the background noise. A limiting aperture ring may further be employed to prevent the X-rays reflected by the inside wall of the envelope tube from entering the MCP.

The invention involves locating an electromagnet coil in the vicinity of the photocathode of the image tube where emitted electron energy is low, to nullify the effects of the earth''s magnetic field. Means are provided for adjusting the field strength of the coil for various orientations of the image tube.

An optical image is projected onto a planar surface of a photocathode that derives an electron beam replica of the image. A target electrode displaced relative to the photocathode so that it does not obstruct the optical image includes a planar surface for receiving and deriving an accurate replica of the electron beam image. The two planar surfaces are parallel. The electron beam image is focused on the target electrode by providing throughout a region that extends between the planar surfaces of the photocathode and receiving electrode, constant, homogeneous d.c. electric and magnetic fields that are canted relative to each other. The electric field extends in a direction perpendicular to the planar surfaces while the magnetic field extends along a straight line that intersects the photocathode and target electrode at an acute angle.

A sensor collects the photons or particles on an array of solid state detectors, as electrical analog signals, and stores the analog-signal information on capacitors of readout arrays associated with the detector arrays. Image-related signals are transferred to integrated circuit chips containing an array of correction processor unit cells. Corrected signals are transferred to an analog image processor. Particle-counting data is transferred directly from the readout array chips to the analog image processor having circuitry for implementing an image processing or energy discrimination algorithm.
