A direct current (DC) electric motor assembly with a closed type overlap stator winding which is commutated with a timed commutating sequence that is capable of generating a stator rotating magnetic field. The coil overlap of the winding and a timed commutation sequence are such that the current in each slot of the stator is additive and when a previous magnetic pole collapses according to a commutation sequence; the energy released by that previous collapsing magnetic field is captured to strengthen the next magnetic field on the commutation sequence schedule. Electrical currents produced by the collapsing magnetic fields flow to low electric potential and add or subtract to the DC current provided by the commutator thus promoting formation of the next magnetic on commutation schedule. When used with a suitable commutator and rotor, the electric motor assembly provides a true brushless high torque speed controlled Real Direct Current (RDC) motor that operates with higher efficiency and higher power density.

A commutator has a tabular holding portion defining a thickness direction. A plurality of segments are arranged in one end in the thickness direction of the holding portion in a radial pattern. Each of the segments has a slidable contact surface which is perpendicular to the thickness direction. A feeding brush is brought into slidable contact with the slidable contact surface. A tabular short-circuit unit short-circuits the segments to be set to the same electric potential with each other. The short-circuit unit is arranged parallel to the slidable contact surface. Accordingly, it is possible to enlarge a cross-sectional area which is perpendicular to a current passing direction of the coupling portion while suppressing an enlargement of a dimension in the axial direction of the commutator.

A direct current motor which includes a stator for producing a fixed magnetic field and a plurality of armature windings. The motor is caused to rotate by applying current to each winding only while that winding is passing through a zone in a given orientation relative to the stator field. The direction of rotation is changed without changing the direction of the current applied to the windings, by changing the orientation of the zone relative to the stator field, to reverse the direction of the rotational force applied to the armature. Because the current does not reverse through the armature windings, the control circuit can be simple and in a preferred embodiment includes only two gate-turn-off silicon controlled rectifiers, a switch, and a resistor.
