An OC3 to three DS3 SONET multiplexer is provided employing a field programmable gate array and other components in a single Type 400 mechanics card to achieve a form factor that is substantially reduced when compared to existing SONET multiplexers. The OC3 to three DS3 SONET multiplexer has integral optical redundancy and automated provisioning. Manual switches are provided to select continue/drop and line build out for each DS3. Switches are also provided for loopback options. The face plate for the multiplexer provides front access to all of the OC3 and DS3 connectors. The multiplexer is interchangeable with DS3 to DS1 multiplexer cards and WDM cards in a compact M13 SONET enclosure that is particularly useful at wireless cell sites.

This proposal outlines an approach for interfacing Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks and for transporting voice, fax and voice-band data calls by the ATM network in an efficient manner. In contrast to the well known ATM Variable Bit Rate (VBR) approach, this proposal allows one to transport 64 kb/s traffic efficiently over ATM by re-using STM network signaling and exploiting the standard AAL-1-type adaptation layer (intended for Constant Bite Rate, CBR, services). We use low bit rate encoding algorithms and achieve additional compression for speech by marking cells that do not contain talk spurts. The invention defines specific rules for STM-to-ATM interfacing, including all routing translation, and identifies necessary Terminal Adapter (TA) and ATM switch capabilities. This approach is an advancement over previous inventions that specified network architecture and terminal adapter requirements to provide a graceful transition from an STM network (for example the AT&T long distance network) to an ATM network. Prior art described how to emulate an STM network in the ATM domain, but did not permit for compression and silence elimination and, therefore, did not allow achieving efficiency gains.

In an ATM over STM transmission system, comprising a transmitter and a receiver, a local clock in the receiver has to be synchronized to a clock in the transmitter. To achieve said synchronization, the receiver comprises timing signal extraction means which generates a timing signal each time a first byte of an ATM cell is received in a first byte of an STM frame. Due to the periodically occurrence of the timing signal this is very suitable for synchronizing a local clock. In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a timing reference value is transmitted by the transmitter to the receiver. This timing reference signal is temporarily stored in a buffer in the receiver. At the instant the timing signal is present at the output of the timing extraction means the content of the buffer is loaded into the clock counter.

A transfer scheme for speech and voice band signals and ISDN digital signals which is capable of reducing a transmission bandwidth required for communications of speech, FAX, voice band data and ISDN digital signals that are to be entered from the STM network to the ATM network, and reducing the ATM cell assembling delay time, is disclosed. In the ATM cell multiplexing at the transmitting side, the signal type judgement results for the signals entered from the STM network are notified to the ATM cell multiplexing unit, and these signals are multiplexed into the ATM cell according to the notified signal types so that it becomes possible to multiplex the signals for each input signal type separately, and it becomes possible to treat the STM signals with different network qualities for different signal types as a single ATM connection in which only the input signals with the same quality requirement are multiplexed within the ATM network.
