For any telephone service subscriber, local services could be offered based on either the packet switched next generation network (NGN) or the PSTN network. The network can be configured such that for each particular phone line, the line's services are based either on a PSTN's class 5 switch or on a NGN's service manager (SM). The local service provider, through software reconfiguration could quickly and efficiently move service subscribers' phone lines from class 5 switch based local services to SM based services, and vice-versa. If a call origination is attempted from a phone connected to an access gateway, the SM will instruct the network to handle the call differently depending on whether the services should be offered based on the class 5 switch or the SM. If the services ought to be offered through the class 5 switch, then the SM will establish a virtual local loop connection between the phone and the class 5 switch. Subsequently, the class 5 switch will provide the dial tone, collect the dialed digits and proceed with establishing the call. The NGN simulates a traditional local loop. If the local services are offered for the customer through the SM, the SM will fully control the call establishment and route the call bypassing the class 5 switch.

System and method for implementing call waiting functions over a network architecture which includes a public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the Internet. The call waiting system allows a user to receive incoming call information from a third party without interrupting an active connection with a second party, such as an Internet Service Provider (ISP). When the user attempts to connect to the ISP, a call waiting service is activated at a service control point connected to the PSTN and the user is notified about any incoming call attempts made after the user establishes a successful connection with the second party. The call waiting system indicates the number of, and provides information about incoming call attempts to the user. Meanwhile, the third party caller has the option of leaving a voice mail message for the user. If the user is actively connected to the Internet, a call waiting Internet server can be used to provide the incoming call information to the user's computer terminal. The call waiting system further allows the user to answer incoming calls in real-time when connected to the Internet and return unsuccessful incoming call attempts at a later time. Thus, Internet users can enjoy an uninterrupted Internet session without missing incoming calls. The call waiting system is configurable for non-Internet applications for allowing receipt of incoming call information without interrupting an active telephone connection.

The ATM switch proxy agents are connected via SVCs established under the control of a proxy agent selector. The proxy agent selector identifies an alternative proxy agents should one or more of the other proxy agents fail. Upon failure of one or more proxy agents, under the control of timing operations within the controller of the switch, the proxy agent selector selects one or more alternative proxy agents. In this manner, proxy agent signaling continues to a ATM switch undisturbed.

An apparatus and method for automatically designating a telephone call route through a telephone network including a circuit switched telephone network (STN) and a packet switched network, such as the Internet. The method includes the steps, executed by a network element, of receiving a telephone number corresponding to a called party receiving the telephone call, reviewing preference information pertaining to a calling party's telephone service, determining from the preference information and the telephone number whether the telephone call can be routed to the called party through the packet switched network, and assigning a route for the telephone call through one of either the packet switched network or the STN to the called party based on whether the call is routable through the packet switched network. A network element (NE) includes the databases and call processing records necessary to route a call and perform these steps.

When the PSTN call originator attempts to establish a call, the Service Switching Point (intelligent network capable switch) under the guidance of the Service Control Point system routes the call to an Intelligent Data Peripheral. Then, the call originator interacts with the Intelligent Data Peripheral. Finally, based on information supplied by the user and user's data application running on user's personal computer, as well as the service logic and service subscriber's data stored on the Service Control Point (or other databases external to Service Control Point), the Service Control Point request the Service Switching Point to route the call to its final destination. The Intelligent Network Data Services Node provided the functionality of a service Switching Point, a Service Control Point, and an Intelligent Data Peripheral. Accordingly, the Intelligent Data Services Node is capable of performing switching functions (like Service Switching Point), data interaction functions (like Intelligent Data Peripheral) and service logic control (like Service Control Point).
