A park lock mechanism for a steering column of a vehicle has a key cylinder rotatable about an axis between off and on positions. A shift lever is movable between a park position and a non-park position and an inhibitor free from any mechanical cable attachment has a locked and unlocked position operably communicating with the key cylinder. When the key cylinder is in the off position, the inhibitor is operably maintained in the locked position to prevent movement of the shift lever from the park position. When the key cylinder is rotated to the on position, the inhibitor is moveable to the unlocked position in response to movement of the shift lever from the park position to the non-park position.

A shifter for a vehicle transmission comprises a cable aligned along an axis generally parallel to the steering column of the vehicle by a support bracket, an actuator lever pivotally secured to the support bracket for pivotal movement about a first pivot axis, a control lever whose first end is secured for pivotal movement coaxial with and corresponding to pivotal movement of the actuator so that a second end of the control lever traverses an arcuate path about the first axis, and a coupling for securing an end of the cable to the second end of the control along the longitudinal axis of the cable. The first pivot axis is aligned at an obtuse angle with respect to the second axis so that displacement of the control lever along the arcuate path is in a plane substantially coincident to the longitudinal axis of the cable. In the preferred embodiment, angular alignment between the first pivot axis and the second pivot axis is predetermined to contribute to alignment of the actuator lever toward a substantially radial position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cable so as to simulate conventional shifter operation. Such simulated alignment of the actuator lever is also provided by a bend formed in the shift lever so that the distal end of the shift lever is positioned substantially radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cable.

A steering column gear-change linkage is capable of accommodating adjustments in two perpendicular directions of a steering column which is telescopic. A support arrangement movable with respect to a fixed support, such as an automobile scuttle incorporates slides having slots extending in said two perpendicular directions. Movement in a vertical plane about a pivot axis is accommodated at a position remote from the steering column head by a slide cooperating with splines on a control tube, angular movement about the longitudinal axis of which is effected by a control lever. The slide is rigid with a lever connected by a linkage with the gearbox. Movement of the control lever axially of the control tube serves to control the gearbox selector rods through a rod coaxial with the control tube and a bowden cable.

The shift assembly includes a shift mechanism secured to the column jacket and a shift cable bracket extending from the shift mechanism, the shift cable bracket having a slot formed therein, a telescope adjustment portion along a first length of the slot, an energy absorbing (E/A) release portion along a second length of the slot, and a raised collar formed in the telescope adjustment portion.
