Extending between the clamping rings is a plurality of guide shafts which slidingly support a split ring clamshell assembly. A cutting tool carrier is affixed to the rotatable ring portion of the clamshell assembly so that when the movable ring is driven the tool carrier orbits the shaft being machined. A plurality of feed screws driven by a servomotor translates the clamshell assembly along the guide shafts.

There is provided a high-production machining device having first and second spindles rotatably mounted on a headstock. A carriage is slidably mounted on the machine bed, and in a preferred embodiment a first drive assembly is provided for sliding the carriage across the upper face of the bed along a transverse axis thereof. First and second slides are slidably mounted on the carriage for movement in a direction normal to the transverse axis, with the first and second slides each adapted to carry a machine tool and each being attached to a common second drive assembly for moving the slides in that normal direction. A linear sensor monitors the positions of the first and second slides relative one another, and an independent compensating assembly is provided for adjusting the position of one of the slides relative the other in the normal direction, whereby positions of the first and second slides in the normal direction can be effectively independently controlled. In a preferred embodiment, the machining device further includes an independent adjustment device for moving one of the spindles relative the other in a direction parallel to the transverse axis, whereby the positions of the first and second slides in the transverse direction can be effectively independently controlled.

To form a protective cover for an elongated machine element, such as a feed spindle or the like (1), a tubular structure (7) which may be formed of a plurality of parallel strips (7a) has edges which are formed with an interengaging, interlocking but separable ridge or rib-groove construction (10, 9) similar to a slide fastener. To provide for secure interengagement and covering of a traveling element (2-4) on the spindle, a guide cone (16) is secured to the traveling element surrounding the tubular structure. The guide cone may include a hub (4) formed with a part-circumferential opening or openings (15) through which the opened guide tube portions can pass to permit the traveling element to move while providing continuous protection to the spindle upon movement thereof, the guide cone insuring reclosing of the rib-and-groove behind the movable element, and opening in advance thereof. The tube may be formed, in addition, with longitudinal guide grooves (23) in which closing elements can engage (FIGS. 8-11).

A method and apparatus for automatically cutting wrappers or the like from metal sheets. A metal sheet is conveyed in the x-direction to a cutting position wherein a pair of cutting blade (i.e., shears) assemblies cut edge portions from the metal sheet to form a cut wrapper or the like having longitudinal edges. The cutting assemblies are movable in the y-dimension--transverse to the x-direction--and are also angularly movable. From the cutting position the cut wrapper is continuously conveyed to a notching position wherein notching assemblies also movable in the y-dimension may form notches in the longitudinal edges of the cut wrapper. At a further point in the x-direction, an edge deforming position may be provided including edge deforming apparatus that also is movable in the y-dimension. Flexible elongated members or the like support the metal sheet spaced from its conveyor during conveying to prevent damage to the conveyor by the cutting or notching assemblies.

A high speed positioning device having a lead screw, a slidable frame and a screw engaging roller assembly supported by the frame for axial movement along the screw. The screw engaging roller assembly includes a pair of opposed rollers supported by a pair of pivoted, spring biased roller carriers which urge the rollers into meshing engagement with the lead screw to move the assembly and consequently the frame relative to the screw as the screw is rotated relative to the frame. Each roller has two degrees of rotational freedom with respect to its associated roller carrier to follow the helical threads of the lead screw. This arrangement provides an anti-backlash coupling between the lead screw and the screw roller assembly, thereby permitting accurate high speed positioning of parts, probes, machine tools and the like.
