摘要:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for determining an auscultatory diagnostic decision. Auscultation of the heart is a well-defined and standard component of physical examinations of patients, however it is a difficult procedure particularly because a stethoscope transfers only a small fraction of the acoustic signal at the chest surface to the listener's ears and filters the cardiac acoustic signal in the process. The system assists listeners by implementing a graphical user interface and voice guided protocol to record data and analyze results for the presence of heart sounds and murmurs. The results are identified in terms of standard clinical auscultatory findings which may then be used to make diagnostic and referral decisions.

Provided is a device for attachment to the head of a horse to enable recording of respiratory sounds in the intensely exercising animal, e.g., in a breezing Thoroughbred racehorse. Also provided are methods for predicting racing performance in a horse, e.g., a Thoroughbred race horse, comprising measuring expiratory and/or inspiratory times for a subject horse during exercise and relating such information to anatomy, front leg stance times and/or front leg stance distances and/or to speed (velocity) to determine the animal's potential to sustain a superior rate of ground coverage for a desired amount of time and identify a maximum comfortable velocity for the animal. A presently preferred embodiment of the methods of the invention comprises predicting performance via identification of expiratory time determined directly from the analysis of recorded respiratory sound from the exercising animal.

An apparatus for detecting a heart sound of a living subject, including a pressure-pulse-wave sensor which is adapted to be worn on a body portion of the subject that is distant from a chest of the subject, detects a pressure pulse wave produced by an artery of the body portion, and generates a pressure-pulse-wave signal representing the detected pressure pulse wave; and a heart-sound extracting device for extracting, from the pressure-pulse-wave signal generated by the pressure-pulse-wave sensor, a heart-sound component representing the heart sound of the subject.

A method for determining the anatomic condition of components of the body of a human or of an animal is disclosed comprising producing a sound signal in a selected component of the body by at least one of passive and active movements of at least one joint. The method includes recording a sound signal at a point adjacent to the selected component of the body and evaluating the sound signal. An auxiliary device selected from the group consisting of a splint, an orthosis and an exercise machine is used which ensures a repeatable movement determined by the design of the auxiliary device. The sound signal caused by the movement is recorded and evaluated by a spectral analysis of frequencies and amplitudes contained in the sound signal. A comparison is made with reference patterns of the spectral analyses for the diagnosis of the anatomic condition. The result of a diagnosis is indicated as at least one of a print out and a screen display and wherein the joint investigated is schematically illustrated on the screen display, optionally with associated soft tissues, tendons and ligaments. The diagnosis is indicated visually, by at least one of coloring, lighting up of and flashing of damaged positions.

The invention provides a device and a method for recording respiratory sounds in exercising horses thereby enabling the user identify upper airway abnormalities and/or evaluate athletic potential by, e.g., measuring expiratory and/or inspiratory times during exercise under field and/or actual racing conditions. In particular, the invention provides a respiratory monitoring system or device in which a transducer or microphone is placed in direct contact with the skin of the subject animal overlying the skull, e.g., the frontal sinus or nasal turbinates and thereby enable recording and analysis of upper airway respiratory sound from the exercising animal. In one embodiment, the invention provides a device wherein the transducer or microphone is positioned or embedded within a gel pad or other suitable medium and the device placed in direct contact with the skin of the animal overlying, e.g., the skull, sinus or nasal turbinates of the horse The device of the invention provides an acoustic monitoring system capable of direct attachment to the head of a racing horse which produces an output signal that is not diluted, attenuated or otherwise corrupted by noises such as wind, hoof beats and/or treadmill noises.

An automatic diagnostic apparatus with a stethoscope is disclosed in which the name of a disease is automatically determined and recorded based on auscultated sounds. Standard data of auscultated sounds for cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and gastrointestinal diseases are inputted into a computer beforehand. Then the waveforms of the auscultated sounds from stethoscoping a patient are converted into digital data and inputted into a computer, and the digital data signals are compared, with searches, with the standard data which have been inputted into the computer in advance. By this process the names of diseases are determined, and the names of diseases thus determined are automatically recorded in a recording device and displayed on monitors so that treatment can initiate swiftly with enhanced credibility of the objective diagnostic process through consensus between the physician and the patient.

A hearing aid has an embedded Internet interface so that the hearing aid can automatically communicate error diagnosis data to a hearing aid acoustician via the Internet so that the hearing aid user need not visit the hearing aid acoustician and so that acoustician can initiate appropriate maintenance, training or repair measures. An appertaining method is also provided.

An electronic auscultation aid improves the performance and convenience of auscultation. The auscultation aid may include means for emphasizing sounds that may be associated with pathological or pre-pathological conditions. The auscultation aid may include a wireless interface for distributing a detected signal to one or more remote devices. The auscultation aid may comprise a mount for temporary attachment to a conventional acoustic stethoscope. The auscultation aid may include an apparatus for switching between active and sleep modes for the conservation of battery life.

A non-invasive brain assessment monitor is disclosed. An embodiment of the monitor includes a head-mounted brain sensor which passively senses acoustic signals generated from pulsing blood flow through a patient's brain. A reference sensor may be mounted at another location on the patient's body to sense an arterial pulse, and the signals from the brain sensor and reference sensor may be compared. Another embodiment includes transmitters which generate acoustic signals in the brain which are also detected by the brain sensor. The brain assessment monitor may be used to detect conditions such as head trauma, stroke and hemorrhage.

A system and method for detecting a gastric motility dysfunction acquires acoustic event information associated with a body and compares the acquired acoustic event information to information associated with a healthy condition. The system and method then identifies the gastric motility dysfunction based on the comparison of the acquired acoustic event information to the information associated with the healthy condition.
