摘要： The disclosure herein describes a system for extinguishing fires which consists in first maintaining a supply of liquid fire extinguishing medium in a tank under a pressure cushion of expellant material; the medium is delivered upon detection of a hazard by opening a normally closed valve in a delivery line connected to the tank; this operation triggers a sequential operation of a plurality of groups of expellant containers which causes additional expellant material to be delivered to the tank to maintain therein a given pressure so as to effect quick and total evacuation of the fire extinguishing medium from the tank to the hazard.

摘要： The specification discloses a fire extinguisher comprising a fire extinguishing substance located in a closed container. A small amount of explosive charge is employed primarily for opening the container wall in the presence of high temperatures to allow the fire extinguishing substance to pass out of the container. In the preferred embodiment, the wall has weakened portions selectively formed to facilitate rupturing to form an opening in the wall without fragmentation. The small amount of explosive charge is located in the container in close proximity to the wall in the vicinity of the weakened portions for rupturing the wall at the weakened portions to form an opening therethrough. In addition, a heat sensitive fuse or firetrain is provided for actuating the explosive charge in the presence of heat above an undesired level. In one embodiment, a secondary explosive charge is located in the fire extinguishing substance and spaced from the small amount of explosive charge and which is actuated by the fuse or firetrain after the small amount of explosive charge is actuated to force the fire extinguishing substance outward through the opening formed by the small amount of explosive charge. The fuse or firetrain comprises a metallic wire having a high thermal conductivity, a fast burning substance located around the wire, a confining cover comprising wires spirally wrapped around the fast burning substance, a nylon yarn counter wrapped, as added hoop compression, and a water-proof layer of highly flammable material deposited on and throughout the confining cover.

摘要： An automatic fire extinguishing apparatus in which a pyrotechnic wire or cord is stretched above the area to be protected, and leads to a fire extinguisher mounted adjacent the area to be protected. The fire extinguisher includes a propellant container operatively connected to the pyrotechnic cord and containing a suitable material adapted to generate gas pressure, plug means closing the propellant container and removable as a result of the burning of the pyrotechnic cord and an outer container having a propellant container mounted therein and containing a suitable fire extinguishing material such as carbon tetrachloride or sodium carbonate, the outer container also having a plurality of apertures oriented such that the entire area to be protected will be blanketed by the fire extinguishing material when the fire extinguishing material is forced through the apertures under pressure and frangible sealing means covering the apertures and adapted to rupture when the propellant applies sufficient pressure to the fire extinguishing material in the outer container. The extinguishing apparatus is particularly useful for Class B fires and is conveniently mounted in a range hood over a cooking range, beneath the hood of an automobile, as an ornament at the top of a Christmas tree, in a laboratory hood over a laboratory bench or as a self-contained unit above a furnace, an air conditioning motor or the like.

摘要： A portable fire extinguisher comprises a container having a tubular neck which is sealed by a membrane. A hollow piston in the container is held adjacent the bottom wall by a spring clamp. A powder fire extinguishing material is loaded into the container above the piston and the interior space above the piston which contains the powder is pressurized by a gas such as air. In addition the space within the piston is pressurized by gas alone which flows during filling around a sealing ring arranged around the piston which is effective to permit a lesser flow rate in the opposite directions when the contents are discharged. The contents are emptiable out of the container by the movement of a nozzle member to puncture a membrane to permit the flow of the powder under pressure to the fire. The decrease in pressure above the piston due to the outflow of powder and gas causes the piston to disengage from the bottom spring clamp and move upwardly to aid in the discharge of the complete contents.
