A transmission fluid filter material and transmission filter produced therefrom comprising a gradient density composite felt which exhibits high particle removal efficiency at 40 micron diameter particle size and larger with exceptionally high dirt holding capacity and no significant increase in clean pressure drop. The upstream portion of the composite felt contains fine fibers that selectively remove first the fine particles while the downstream portion acts to sieve coarse particles and build a porous filter cake, thereby extending the useful life of the filter.

Monocomponent fibers of different polymers can be extruded side-by-side from the same die system. Sheath/core bicomponent fibers can be alternated with monocomponent fibers formed of the same core polymer as used in the bicomponent fibers. Bicomponent fibers having a common core polymer and different sheath polymers can be extruded from alternate spinneret orifices in the same die plate. Multiple distribution plates are provided with surface grooves or depressions to direct polymer materials from independent sources to only selected spinneret openings in an array of spinneret openings while maintaining the polymers segregated from each other. Unique products formed from the improved mixed fiber technology are useful as high efficiency filters in various environments, coalescent filters, reservoirs for marking and writing instruments, wicks and other elements designed to hold and transfer liquids for medical and other applications, heat and moisture exchangers and other diverse fibrous matrices.

A method of continuously manufacturing tubular filter products includes rotating a mandrel in a first rotational direction, depositing nonwoven fibers on the mandrel to form a tube and continuously withdrawing the tube from the mandrel by engaging a peripheral surface of the tube with one or more detents extending radially from a surface of a roller. The roller rotates in a direction opposite the first rotational direction as the one or more detents engage the tube to a predetermined depth relative. For carrying out such a method, an apparatus includes a melt blowing die assembly for expelling melt blown fibers, a rotating mandrel arranged to receive the melt blown fibers from the melt blowing die assembly for allowing the melt blown fibers to accumulate in a body thereon and a rotating roll having a pattern of protruding detents. The roll is arranged so that at least some of the detents will come within a predetermined distance of the mandrel for contacting the melt blown fibers in a manner forcing the melt blown fibers accumulated on the mandrel to move in a direction parallel to the mandrel. A tubular filter product includes a plurality of melt blown fibers in a body defining an outer surface and an inner surface, the body defining a pattern of cavities between the outer surface and the inner surface.

The polypropylene coating portion includes a first coating layer bonded to an inner circumferential surface of the tubular body portion when the first coating layer is still viscid, and a second coating layer sprayed onto an outer circumferential surface and two annular end surfaces of the tubular body portion to connect to two ends of the first coating layer. Two ends of the tubular body portion that has been coated by the polypropylene coating portion are sprayed with a waterproof material to form two watertight layers thereat to ensure water to pass both the tubular body portion and the polypropylene coating portion and be filtered and purified twice. The water-purifying filter with such structure does not need costs for storing and assembling separate polypropylene coating and end caps and can therefore be provided at lower cost.
