Abstract:
A method and apparatus is disclosed to improve the metal yield by adjusting the tilt angle of a tilting vessel having a submerged tap hole. The tilt angle is adjusted in response to parameters inherent in the pouring process, i.e. the proximity of the vessel contents to the vessel lip, the age of the tap hole, the liquid head over the tap hole, etc. Additionally, methods are disclosed to enhance the metal yield by advancing or moving back the furnace without knowledge of the tilt angle. Moreover, such methods and apparatus can be implemented through the use of computer based algorithms. The methods can also be used to archive pouring parameter information for future uses such as training and reviewing.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for producing a metal component from a non-dendritic, semi-solid metal alloy slurry involves the use of a graphite agitator that is functionally equivalent to conventional metal rod agitators, and has the additional advantage of having a very low surface wettability, whereby labor and expenses associated with removing a metal alloy skin formed after withdrawal of the agitator from a metal slurry is eliminated or at least substantially reduced. The invention also provides an improved process and apparatus for producing a metal component from a non-dendritic semi-solid metal slurry by transferring the slurry to a cooling vessel for subsequent cooling and raising of the solids content without agitation after the slurry has been formed with agitation in a first vessel, whereby more rapid cooling of the slurry and increased production rates are achievable.

Fume dust is prevented when molten metal is poured into a vessel, and water or water mist is sprayed into the vessel or onto the molten metal, creating a reduced level of oxygen concentration of about 12% by volume, preferably about 8% by volume, inside the vessel or at the molten metal surface.

Apparatus and method for casting metals and alloys using a pyrometer positioned outside or inside of a casting chamber and relative to a mold heating element in the casting chamber to view a region of a hot melt-filled refractory mold to improve accuracy of the mold temperature readings. The pyrometer is disposed at an elevation outside the casting chamber to view the mold along a viewing path above an induction coil and through an opening in a tubular susceptor disposed about the mold. Alternatively, the tubular susceptor and induction coil both include horizontal openings through which the pyrometer views the melt-filled mold from outside the casting chamber. The pyrometer is positioned to view a uniform profile region of the melt-filled mold having multiple mold cavities as the mold and susceptor are relatively moved.

An apparatus for filtering molten metal held in a vessel before the metal enters the dosing tube. The filtering apparatus includes an attachment portion that mounts to the dosing tube, a filter body connected to the attachment portion and a planar surface attached to an end of the filter body opposite the attachment portion. The filter body can include a beveled end opposite the attachment portion where the planar surface is attached. The apparatus can be made from a bonded-particle material made from silicon carbide or aluminum oxide held together by an aluminum-resistant binder.

A method of dispensing or pouring molten metal, e.g., aluminum, from a container or vessel, the flow rate controlled to minimize splashing of the molten aluminum exiting the container, the method comprising the steps of providing a container for containing molten metal, the container having an outlet for dispensing molten metal therefrom and providing a body of molten aluminum in the container, the body having a top surface. A pressure lower than atmospheric pressure is maintained on the surface of the body in the container vessel for purposes of controlling the flow of molten metal through said outlet. Molten metal is dispensed through the outlet by increasing the pressure maintained in the container towards atmospheric pressure.

A method and apparatus for alternating pouring into molds, casts or refining hearths from a common hearth in a furnace. The apparatus provides a main hearth, a plurality of optional refining hearths, and a plurality of casting molds or direct molds whereby the refining hearths and molds define at least two separate ingot making lines. The main hearth alternatively pours into a first ingot making line while the other line is prepared, and vice versa allowing for continuous melting.
Abstract:
A casting furnace for use in melting and molding metals. The furnace has a mold insertion and withdrawal system attached thereto and incorporates an offset mold elevator for moving a mold up and down from a mold chamber to a furnace chamber while eliminating the need for a pit. The furnace further includes a readily removable chill plate on which the mold rides. An overhead material feed system is also provided.
