A tiltable furnace to supply molten metal to a ladle and the ladle is connected to a computing and automatic control system which continuously senses the rate of change of weight of the ladle as liquid is poured from the ladle into a mold. The control system tilts the furnace and the ladle to regulate the flow of liquid into the mold to hold the casting to a predetermined weight. The rate of change of the weight of liquid times the time of the pour will give the weight poured in that time.

The level of a metallic bath, e.g. of an iron melt in an ingot mold, is determined by recurrent electro-optical scanning of the interior of the vessel along a narrow vertical strip zone. The output signals of the scanner are processed in an arithmetic unit which averages successive readings, to compensate for fluctuations, and may also receive a corrective signal in order to offset periodic level changes due to an intentional rocking of the vessel. The arithmetic unit may work into a visual indicator and into a controller adjusting the rate of inflow and/or withdrawal to maintain the bath level substantially constant.

A process is provided by determining the castability of a metallic composition comprising a metal matrix containing secondary solid and discrete degenerate dendrites. The composition is heated and a calibrated probe is contacted under force to the surface of the composition and a parameter of distance the probe travels into the composition as a function of the force is determined. The composition is castable when the parameter measured corresponds to the condition when at least about 50 wt. % of the secondary solid is liquified and between about 25 and 90 wt. % of the total composition is liquified.

A method and apparatus for continuously measuring the temperature of a metal rod which is continuously cast and as the rod is fed away from its associated casting mold includes a rotating cylinder or wheel having a plurality of temperature sensors arranged at spaced locations around the circumference which engage against the rod at one or more particular locations. The temperature which is sensed is advantageously transmitted either by wire or radio wave to a control station where the information is employed for the regulation of the feeding and molding and subsequent forming of the continuously cast rod. The device advantageously includes an electrical temperature feeler having one feeler element which is adapted to be connected to a segmental contact and another feeler element adapted to be connected to another segmental contact within the cylinder which moves with its circumference in engagement with a side of the cast rod which is formed. A electrical circuit is provided with means for determining the maximum temperature of each of the feeler elements or a specific temperature as desired and for amplifying the indicated value in transmitting it to a control station as desired. The cylinder may be arranged to roll against the rod, for example, at the location of the so-called sump tip at which the entire rod cross sections begins to solidify.

Method and apparatus for automatically controlling the pouring of molten metal into a series of closed casting molds is disclosed. Molten metal flows in a stream from a lip-pour or bottom-pour casting ladle into a pouring gate at the top of a mold and partially fills the gate. Visible light or infrared radiation is emitted from the metal surface in the gate and is detected by a sensing device. The sensing device generates a signal which is a function of the radiation received, and therefore the apparent area of the surface of metal in the gate. The signal operates a ladle control mechanism to control the flow rate of the stream to keep the gate level substantially constant during pouring.

An apparatus for controlling the level of liquid steel in a continuous-casting mold wherein the position of the molten steel level within the mold is detected by a coil juxtaposed therewith and forming part of a resonant circuit controlling an oscillator. The capacitor portion of this resonant circuit is formed at least in part by a coaxial cable connecting the coil to the balance of the oscillator circuit. The output frequency of the oscillator is combined with the signal of a reference oscillator in a modulator, the low-frequency passband of this signal is then transformed into an analog voltage proportional to frequency and is used to control a servomotor which regulates the feed of molten metal to the mold.
