摘要: A method of making a mold which is utilized to manufacture a tire, the mold having a contour curved surface with broad bone portions and narrow blade portions extending therefrom, comprises a first machining stage utilizing a plurality of electrical discharge machining electrodes for approaching a workpiece used to make the mold, at different angles. Each of the electrodes used in the first machining stage are shaped to avoid the removal of excessive metal from the mold so that both the bone portions and the blade portions can extend normally from the contour curved surface. The method includes a second machining stage utilizing a further electrical discharge machining electrode which has recesses for receiving bone portions and blade portions formed by the first stage electrodes, and is movable laterally of the contour surface to form well-defined edges of the bone and blade portions.

摘要: An apparatus and method of electrochemically machining a surface of revolution on a rotating workpiece includes rotating the workpiece about its axis and positioning an electrochemical machining tool having an essentially flat machining surface adjacent the workpiece to form a gap. The tool includes a machining surface having a straight edge in a plane which also includes the axis of the workpiece. The machining surface is oriented essentially perpendicular to the plane so that the smallest gap dimension exists between the straight edge of the tool and the workpiece. Electrolyte is introduced into the gap in a direction so that it flows across the machining surface and between the tool and the workpiece in a direction parallel to the direction of relative movement and toward the smallest gap dimension.

摘要: There is disclosed an apparatus for giving a satin finish to the surface of a crowned roll. A plurality of electrode heads are divided and arranged along the axis of rotation of the crowned roll to be worked, and one or a plurality of rectangular electrodes are mounted at a predetermined spacing on each of the electrode heads. The discharge gap of each rectangular electrode is controlled by a servomechanism at a predetermined value and it is also fed traversely a predetermined distance by a traverse feed mechanism. The electrode is rectractably mounted on the electrode head and it is fixed in position so that the discharge surface of the electrode is projected into contact with the roll surface of the crowned roll. The discharge electrode surface of each rectangular electrode is initially flat and this discharge surface is consumed to conform with the shape or contour of the roll surface upon initiation of discharge.
