摘要: A method and apparatus for providing welding type power on one of at least two output terminals is disclosed. Input power is received and welding type power is derived and provided by a shared power circuit. The welding type power is provided across a shared terminal and only two process terminals in response to a desired process. The desired process can be set bu user input, feedback, or sensing working connections. The process terminal is selected by selectively opening and closing at least two controllable switches.

摘要: The invention relates to a welding head (1) comprising a heat-resistant electrode (2) for carrying out TIG welding operations on workpieces, in which the electrode (2) is movably mounted and can also be caused to move by a device (20). The electrode (2) preferably carries out either a rotating movement about the axis (A) thereof or an oscillating movement about said axis. During a preferably manual welding operation, undesired alloying-up is thus excluded during accidental contact between the electrode (2) and the workpiece to be welded. Moreover, repeated adhesion of liquefied welding filler material to the electrode (2) can be substantially prevented in the event that a welding filler material is supplied. With welding heads () which are cooled by means of a fluid circuit, said circuit, in cooperation with a turbine, can also be used to drive a rotating electrode (2). The movable electrode (2) can be connected to the voltage source thereof either via a sliding contact or via an electrically conducting liquid surrounding the electrode (2). The invention further relates to a method in which the welding head (1) according to the invention is used.

摘要: An improved rod for a thermal cutting or burning torch, especially suited for underwater use, is shown to have a metallic outer tube sheath containing exothermic fuel elements within the interior of the tube, providing an open region for the passage of gas to the tip of the tube. The tube is electrically insulated along its outer length, save for an exposed open end adapted to be clamped in an electrically conductive gas-providing cutting torch handle. Within the improved rod, each of the fuel elements consists of a generally ferrous composition having one of two types of coatings. In a first embodiment, an element will be coated with a copper cladding to approximately two percent of the overall weight of the element. In the second embodiment, an element will be clad with either aluminum, or one of the aluminum class of metals, to approximately 4.6 percent by weight, the exact percentage being that percentage required for perfect thermite combustion. In use, the rod containing at least one such element is inserted within an electrically-conducting, gas-providing handle. Pure oxygen is provided, pressurized through the length of the rod, driving water out from the rod and providing a positive oxygen flow. A source of electricity is then provided to the rod and is conducted to the open tip of the rod. A closed electrical circuit is provided between the rod and the object to be cut. Upon striking an arc with the rod, a thermite burning reaction is initiated, which continues even when the supply of electricity is terminated. The rod will burn so long as oxygen is provided, providing a particularly hot cutting flame. With fuel elements of the first embodiment, the flame is found to be as effective or more effective than a thermite cutting rod. With fuel element of the second embodiment, the ability to exactly match the proper portions of aluminum or the aluminum class of metals and iron for a thermite reaction is found to produce a more effective and efficient uniform burning rod. In both embodiments, spurious internal burning, resulting from internal electrical ignition effects, is largely eliminated.

摘要: The invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for carrying out the submerged arc surfacing of metallic work pieces with metal electrode strips melting in an electric arc while forming welding beads upon the work piece. A slag breaker comprising a series of parallel plate portions disposed substantially perpendicular to the surface of the electrode strip is positioned on the leading side of the electrode strip adjacent the region of the electric arc. The slag breaker serves to break up an accumulation of fused flux particles which tend to form a sheet in front of the welding arc which, if permitted to form would block the flux feed into the welding arc on the leading side. The slag breaker thus serves to prohibit formation of such a sheet and thereby permits uniform flow of flux to insure complete submergence of the arc in the flux material thus minimizing the chance of the arc flashing through the flux burden and resulting in defects in the deposited cladding material.

摘要: A method of arc welding is disclosed in which a consumable electrode of predetermined composition and the same composition in granular or powdered form are fed separately to the weld area, so that variations in the amount of consumable electrode and granular or powdered composition are of no consequence, and the composition of the deposit will always remain constant. The necessity for careful control of the ratio of feed is thus eliminated, and, moreover, the pool of molten material under the arc is substantially cooler than that of the pool in other or conventional submerged arc welding methods, with the result that there is less dilution of the pool by the base or substrate.
