An abrasive solid is composed of an organic high polymer matrix and an abrasive material dispersed in the matrix to form a solid mass, whose cutting resistance is from 2 kgf (19.6 N) to 15 kgf (147 N) so that the abrasive solid is severable into two with use of a knife, cutter or the like tool and highly effective to remove rust from any target article. Two or more of such abrasive solids each having these properties are consolidated to form an integral piece that can be trimmed into any desired shape so as to perform both the rough and smooth abrasion works for removal of rust, without using and changing any ordinary abrasive tools one after another.

A method for producing organically bonded abrasive article includes combining an abrasive grain component and a phenol-based resin component. The combined components are molded and thermally cured in an atmosphere that comprises humidity, wherein the atmosphere contacts the molded components, thereby producing the organically bonded abrasive grain. The abrasive grain optionally can first be combined with an organosilicon compound, to form organosilicon-treated abrasive grain, and then with the phenol-based resin component. In one example, the phenol-based resin is thermally cured in the presence of steam. Abrasive articles produced by the method of the invention generally have improved properties under wet grinding conditions. In one example, an abrasive article produced by the method of the invention includes ammonia in an amount less than about 50 ppm. In another example, an abrasive grinding wheel produced by the method of the invention has a strength retention greater than about 57 percent.

An abrasive composite material containing a matrix, abrasive grains, and carbon fiber having a multi-layer structure, each fiber filament of the carbon fiber having an outer diameter of about 2 to about 500 nm and an aspect ratio of about 5 to about 15,000, and including a hollow space extending along its center axis. Preferably, the carbon fiber has a BET specific surface area of about 4 m2/g or more; the carbon fiber has, at a carbon (002) plane, an interlayer distance (d002) of about 0.345 nm or less as measured by means of X-ray diffractometry; and the ratio of the peak height (Id) of the band at 1,341 to 1,349 cmnull1 in a Raman scattering spectrum of the carbon fiber to the peak height (Ig) of the band at 1,570 to 1,578 cmnull1 in the spectrum; i.e., Id/Ig, is about 1.5 or less. More preferably, the carbon fiber contains branched vapor grown carbon fiber; boron is contained, in an amount of about 0.01 to about 5 mass %, in the interior of crystals constituting the carbon fiber; and the amount of the carbon fiber contained in the abrasive composite material is about 2 to about 40 vol. %. When the abrasive composite material is employed, high-precision grinding or polishing can be attained. When the composite material is employed in a cutting tool material, the resultant cutting tool material realizes high-speed, high-efficiency cutting, and enables wire-cut electrical discharge machining.
