A segmented die assembly comprises a plurality of side-by-side and separate units. Each die unit, includes a manifold segment and a die module mounted thereon. The manifold segments are interconnected and function to deliver process air and polymer melt to the modules. Each module including a nozzle through which the polymer melt is extruded forming a row of filament(s). The filaments from the array of modules are deposited on a substrate or collector. The die assembly is preferably used to apply a hot melt adhesive to a substrate, but also may be used to produce meltblown webs.

Polyethylene having a broad molecular weight distribution is extruded in pellet form using a pelletizing extruder having one or more zones essentially filled with the polyethylene and two or more zones partially filled with the polyethylene. The polyethylene is fed into the extruder at a temperature sufficient to melt the polyethylene, and a mixture of an inert gas and oxygen is fed into at least one partially filled zone of the extruder with the exception of the feed zone. The mixture contains about 1 to about 21% by volume oxygen based on the volume of the gas mixture.

This invention relates to an apparatus and method for introducing various additives in solid form into a soap mass for the ultimate manufacture of soap bars. Specifically, the invention is directed to producing soap bars having a multicolored or marbleized appearance and made from a variety of different colored soap materials. Soap pellets having a color are introduced into a soap plodder as is customary. A second or alternate color of soap pellet is separately introduced into the interior of the plodder just before that point where the helical screw of the plodder enters the barrel of the extruder portion of the plodder. The plodder has been structurally modified so that the second or alternate color pellet is introduced into the plodder by means of a special feeding apparatus which not only controls the rate of delivery of the alternate color soap pellets but insures the pellets are directly introduced into the chamber formed by a flight of the helical screw immediately before the point where the screw enters the plodder barrel.

This invention concerns a method of manufacturing a highly conductive polytetrafluoroethylene sheet; a method of manufacturing a highly conductive unsintered polytetrafluoroethylene sheet: and a method of manufacturing a highly conductive sintered sheet. In the first method, a paste of polytetrafluoroethylene powder admixed with conductive substance and extrusion lubricant is extruded to preform an unsintered tube-like material, and at least one place on the circumference of this extruded material, the material is cut open longitudinally and the resulting sheet is calendered if necessary. The second method includes a sintering process for the sheet. This invention also concerns a highly conductive polytetrafluoroethylene sheet having a wide-width and long-length, which is obtained by the above-mentioned method. This sheet is not less than 170 mm in width and has variance of volume resistivity (conductivity) in the longitudinal direction, 10% or less, preferably 7% or less in the cross direction. This invention can provide a highly conductive wide-type PTFE sheet whose conductivity in the longitudinal direction is nearly uniform in the cross direction.

A feedblock for supplying a multi-layer stream of polymeric material to an extrusion die is provided wherein the dimension of at least some of the layers of the multi-layer stream can be precisely adjusted and/or controlled. The feedblock includes a primary flow path which is used to create a first layer and two secondary flow paths which are used to create a set of second and third layers. The secondary flow paths are positioned relative to the primary flow path such that the second and third layers are deposited on opposing sides of the primary layer in a sandwich-like configuration. Each of the secondary flow paths include a contoured slot through which a secondary fluid stream of polymeric material is deposited onto a primary stream of polymeric fluid flowing in the primary flow path. The contoured slot is geometrically shaped such that adjusting the position of the contoured slot alters the shape of the secondary fluid stream as it is deposited onto the primary flow path. A set of heaters disposed within the feedblock are positioned on either side of the combined primary and secondary flow paths adjacent to the exit port of the feedblock and are used to heat the secondary streams thereby altering the flow characteristics of the streams which, in turn, causes a corresponding change in the dimensions and profiles of the secondary fluid streams.

The manifold segments are interconnected and function to deliver process air and polymer melt to the modules. Each die module includes (a) a fiberization nozzle, and (b) a valve for controlling the flow of polymer therethrough. The gear pump of each manifold segment receives a polymer melt and delivers it either to the die module (with its valve open) or to the recirculation module (with the die module valve closed). Polymer melt flowing through the die module and is discharged as a filament or filaments onto a moving substrate or collector. On the other hand, polymer flow through the recirculation module is returned to the polymer melt hopper or reservoir for recirculation through the die assembly.
