Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing pipes using thermoplastic pipe and “tape” (continuous fiber, fully wetted in a similar thermoplastic as the pipe) that embeds its fibers into pipe surface. The thermoplastic pipe is mechanically compressed prior fiber tape being applied. Outer diameter reduction of the pipe is at least partly maintained by the fiber tape being tightly wrapped around the pipe immediately after compression causes the pipe to contract. Then, an external heat source is applied to the pipe causing the thermoplastic to melt and the pipe to undergo thermal expansion. Fibers stretch less and are embedded into the molten layer of the pipe, creating a permanent bond between the fibers and the pipe. Individual pipes may be joined using couplers or butt welds.

Abstract: A substrate includes a double-network polymer system including a cross-linked, covalently-bonded polymer and a reversible, partially ionicly-bonded polymer, wherein the substrate has a moisture level less than or equal to 15 percent of the total weight of the substrate, and wherein the substrate includes a latent retractive force. A method for manufacturing a substrate includes producing a double-network hydrogel including a cross-linked, covalently-bonded polymer and a reversible, ionicly-bonded polymer; elongating by force the double-network hydrogel in at least one direction; dehydrating while still elongated the double-network hydrogel to form a substantially-dehydrated double-network polymer system; and releasing the force to produce the substrate.

Abstract: A method of making a self-sealing membrane for a prosthetic implant includes applying tension to a first layer of a cured elastomeric material to stretch the first layer, and while the first layer remains stretched, applying a second layer of an uncured elastomeric material over a first major surface of the first layer. After the second layer is cured, the tension on the first layer is released, whereupon the first layer returns to a non-stretched configuration for holding the second layer in contraction. The method includes, while the first layer remains stretched, applying a third layer of an uncured elastomeric material over a second major surface of the first layer. After curing the second and third layers, tension is released from the first layer, which returns to the non-stretched configuration for holding the second and third layers in contraction.

Abstract: Novel or improved microporous single or multilayer battery separator membranes, separators, batteries including such membranes or separators, methods of making such membranes, separators, and/or batteries, and/or methods of using such membranes, separators and/or batteries are provided. In accordance with at least certain embodiments, a multilayer dry process polyethylene/polypropylene/polyethylene microporous separator which is manufactured using the inventive process which includes machine direction stretching followed by transverse direction stretching and a subsequent calendering step as a means to reduce the thickness of the multilayer microporous membrane, to reduce the percent porosity of the multilayer microporous membrane in a controlled manner and/or to improve transverse direction tensile strength. In a very particular embodiment, the inventive process produces a thin multilayer microporous membrane that is easily coated with polymeric-ceramic coatings, has excellent mechanical strength properties due to its polypropylene layer or layers and a thermal shutdown function due to its polyethylene layer or layers. The ratio of the thickness of the polypropylene and polyethylene layers in the inventive multilayer microporous membrane can be tailored to balance mechanical strength and thermal shutdown properties.

Abstract: A multilayered stretched polyamide film which is biaxially stretched, and comprises three layers composed of a polyamide resin composition and comprising layer B as an easily adhesive layer, layer A as a base layer, and layer C as an easily slippery layer in this order, wherein the film satisfies the following (1) to (4); (1) the layer A contains 50 to 90% by mass of polyamide 6 and 10 to 50% by mass of a polyamide 6 copolymer in which a ratio of a copolymerization component in the copolymer is 3 to 35% by mass; (2) the layer B contains 0 to 40% by mass of polyamide 6 and 60 to 100% by mass of the polyamide 6 copolymer in which a ratio of the copolymerization component in the copolymer is 3 to 35% by mass; (3) the layer C contains 70% by mass or more of polyamide 6 and 0.05 to 1% by mass of fine particles having an average diameter of 0.1 to 10 μm; (4) the film has tensile strength at break of 150 MPa or more both in MD direction and TD direction; and (5) the film has laminate strength of 3.3 N/15 mm or more.
