The invention relates to a method for carrying out the allocation of tire pressure control devices (4a to 4d) to wheel positions in a tire pressure control system of a motor vehicle. Each tire pressure control device (4a to 4d) transmits, at certain time intervals, its individual identifier and a lengthened high frequency signal to the central unit (10) of the tire pressure control system. The high frequency signals have an individual trace which is dependent upon the rotational angle of the wheel and on the time because of the geometry of the wheel box and as a consequence of the rotation of the wheel. In the central unit (10), a time point is fixed from two sequential high frequency signals at which the wheel assumes the same angular position in each case with this wheel being the wheel from which the signals were transmitted. The corresponding wheel has made an integer number of revolutions between the two time points. In the central unit (10), with the aid of the signals of the rpm sensors (12a to 12d), the wheel position is determined in which the wheel has made an integer number of revolutions between the two time points. The corresponding wheel position is allocated to the individual identifier transmitted from the tire pressure control device (4a to 4d).

A method and apparatus for connecting an electronic monitoring device to a pneumatic tire includes the steps of providing a green tire and attaching the electronic monitoring package to an anchoring patch. The anchoring patch having the electronic monitoring package is then mounted to the green tire and cured during the green tire cure process. A battery is then provided and a direct electrical connection between the electronic monitoring package and battery is then formed by plugging the battery into the electronic monitoring package. The electronic monitoring package may also be mounted in the green tire itself and cured with the green tire. The battery is connected to the electronic monitoring package after the cure process.

A low tire pressure monitoring device that is affixed to a tire valve stem and methods of using the same. The monitoring device comprises a housing having a counter-pressure chamber, a main pressure chamber, and a flexible membrane that separates the two chambers. The monitoring device is calibrated by trapping the tire's initial air pressure in the counter-pressure chamber. The air pressure within the main pressure chamber is equivalent to the air pressure within the tire. Over the course of time, the air pressure within the tire and concomitantly the air pressure within the main pressure chamber decreases. When the pressure in the counter-pressure is greater than the pressure within the main pressure chamber, the flexible membrane touches and completes an electrical circuit and a warning signal is emitted.

A patch and method for mounting an electronic monitoring device to the innerliner of a pneumatic tire is provided wherein the monitoring device is potted directly to an attachment patch. A frame is built on an attachment patch and the electronic monitoring device is disposed inside the frame. An encapsulation material is poured into the frame and cured to encapsulate the monitoring device directly against the patch. The patch may then be connected to the innerliner of a pneumatic tire.

After a rubber patch is vulcanized, the patch is permanently assembled to the innerliner of a vulcanized tire by affixing it to the tire innerliner. An electronic monitoring device, after having been encapsulated in a suitable rigid potting material to form a rigid tag, is fitted with a power source to form a tag assembly in a shape which allows for insertion into a cavity in the patch. The tag is carefully inserted into the cavity housing. The tag assembly is locked into place within the cavity using a suitable removable locking device.

A vehicle transmitter transmits the control signals for use in regulating transmission of the tire pressure signals. A controller on-board the vehicle in communication with the receiver and transmitter conveys tire pressure information to a vehicle occupant based on the tire pressure signals, determines whether the vehicle is occupied based on the passive entry signal, and generates a control signal operative to halt transmission of the tire pressure signals when the vehicle is unoccupied.
