A motor rotates the mandrel at a selectable speed. A timing belt couples the mandrel rotation to a traversing mechanism supporting an optical fiber carrying reel and is adjustable to variably convert the rotary to linear motion. The shaft supporting the reel has brake means for adjusting the tension on the fiber. The fiber feeds over an idler roll which operates to count the number of meters of fiber wound on the mandrel, and then passes under a tension sensing roll. By varying mandrel rotation speed, traversing speed and reel drag, compliant hydrophone mandrels can have optical fibers wrapped therearound having many different fiber lay angles and fiber tensions, thus permitting production of hydrophones of desired characteristics.

Apparatus for producing a helical wire coil which can be subdivided into discrete spiral binders for use in steno pads or other types of stationery products has a driven mandrel with a cylindrical intermediate section flanked by two frustoconical sections whose larger-diameter ends are adjacent to the respective axial ends of the cylindrical section. The wire to be coiled is fed into the inlet of a helical path which is defined by guide pins distributed around the sections of the mandrel. The inlet is adjacent to one of the frustoconical sections and the wire which is fed into the inlet advances along the helical path to be coiled during travel around the one frustoconical section, thereupon around the cylindrical section and finally around the other frustoconical section. The exposed surface of the cylindrical section may be grooved. The distance between the inlet of the helical path and the cylindrical section is less than the length of the cylindrical section, as considered in the axial direction of the mandrel. The other frustoconical section ensures that the convolutions of the coil can contract subsequent to advancement beyond the cylindrical section but remain coaxial with the mandrel.

Apparatus for winding helical wire coils which can be subdivided into discrete spiral binders for insertion into the perforations of steno pads, exercise books or like stationery products has a rotary mandrel whose periphery is adjacent to several rows of rotary wire guiding pins defining a helical path extending around the periphery of the mandrel. The axes of the pins are slightly offset with reference to radial positions relative to the mandrel so that the pins can readily rotate in response to lengthwise movement of the wire therealong and their inner end faces can be placed sufficiently close to the periphery of the mandrel so as to prevent a thin wire from penetrating into the space between the end face of a pin and the periphery of the mandrel. When a feeding device supplies a continuous length of wire into the inlet of the helical path, the wire is entrained by the periphery of the mandrel and is caused to advance along the helical path with attendant conversion into the convolutions of a coil moving axially of the mandrel under the action of the pins which rotate in response to movement of the wire therealong. Those end portions of the pins which are immediately adjacent to the mandrel may resemble conical frusta. The pins are mounted in holders which are adjustable axially of the pins, and each pin is adjustable axially in the respective holder.
