In a second embodiment, two or more different types or colors of ribbon are wound either concentrically or in juxtaposed orientation onto the same spool. A generally cylindrical yarn package having multiple yarn ends is formed by converging the multiple yarn ends to form a substantially planar yarn end ribbon having the multiple yarn ends in a side-by-side untwisted contacting relationship with one another. The yarn end ribbon formed of the converged yarn ends is then wound about a continuously rotating yarn package core by reciprocally traversing the yarn end ribbon parallel to the longitudinal axis of the yarn package core while maintaining the side-by-side untwisted contacting relationship between the multiple yarn ends of the yarn end ribbon. In such a manner, a generally cylindrical yarn package is formed having multiple yarn ends which may later be separated into individual yarn ends for downstream processing by tangentially unwinding and separating the individual yarn ends from the yarn package. As a result, the present invention allows an increase in spinning capacity to be achieved (i.e., since a greater number of yarn ends may be produced) without the need for additional substantial capital investment for new individual winders.

A device for controlling the twist associated with optical fiber being wo on a bobbin is disclosed. Signal transmission analysis in fibers wound on bobbins require techniques not normally encountered when considering long straight fibers. Signal loss on a fiber cable payout assembly is mainly due to small bends in the fiber at crossover positions and in the transmission regions where the winding travel changes directions. The signal attenuation in a length of optical fiber is also known to be a function of the amount of twist in the fiber both in the wound and payed out states. This invention allows the amount of twist of the optical fiber to be precisely controlled from zero to full (360 degrees twist per turn of the bobbin) twist to provide optimum signal transmission for both the wound and payed out states.

A cable package (20) which includes two coiled cable lengths (22 and 24) interconnected by an intermediate section (26), is formed by winding wire bundles (28 and 30) onto first and second winding sections (44 and 46) of a collapsible reel (42) in sequence.
