A method for purifying a spent acid catalyst from an acid catalyzed chemical reaction that generates a mixture of a product, spent add and tar, includes the steps of separating the mixture of product, spent acid, and tar into a product fraction and a spent acid fraction, said spent acid fraction comprising a mixture of spent acid and tar, and separating the spent acid fraction, by flotation separation, centrifugation, or liquid-liquid coalescence, into a tar fraction and a de-tarred spent acid fraction. The fluidized tar and the de-tarred spent acid can each be further processed to produce concentrated acid.

A method of recovering concentrated sulfuric acid from the product obtained from the acid hydrolysis of a cellulose-containing material such a biomass. The method involves contacting the product with an extraction solvent comprising one or more of the C.sub.4 -C.sub.7 alcohols as the major component to separate the product into a sulfuric acid enriched phase. The sulfuric acid from this enriched phase is then separated and recovered by a further extraction procedure.

The process for separating sulfuric acid from the sulfoxidation output obtained when paraffins are reacted with sulfuric acid, oxygen and water in the presence of ultraviolet light, using an alcohol containing at least 5 C atoms, is improved by treating the sulfoxidation output with a 0.25 to 2.5 fold amount by weight of a mixture of(a) 40 to 95% by weight of alcohol, and(b) 5 to 60% by weight of paraffins and the aqueous phase formed thereby is separated with the sulfuric acid.

A SYSTEM FOR REDUCING THE CORROSION RATE ON METALS IN A SPENT SULFURIC ACID SLUDGE ECOVERY POCESS. THIS SYSTEM COMPRISES THE ADDITION OF A CORROSION INHIBITOR TO SPENT SULFURIC ACID SLUDGES, AS IT IS PUMPED FROM A STORAGE MEDIUM THROUGH A HEAT EXCHANGER TO MAINTAIN THESE SLUDGES AT A CONSTANT TEMPERATURE. THE CORROSION INHIBITORS CONSIST OF WATER OR WATER IN THE FORM OF DILUTE FRESH SULFURIC ACID.
