A mold (1) for press-molding glass optical articles with high precision includes a mold base (2) having a press surface, and a thin film (3) of (ZrO2)x(Y2O3)y(Al2O3) z material deposited on the press surface; wherein x is in the range from 0.77 to 0.92, y is in the range from 0.05 to 0.15, and z is in the range from 0.03 to 0.08. A thickness of the thin film is in the range from 100 to 500 angstroms. The mold base is made of a hard metallic alloy or a ceramic material. The mold does not adhere to glass material, and is resistant to oxidization. A method for making the mold is also disclosed.

Apparatus for indexing glassware through a series of angularly spaced stations includes first and second arrays of glassware gripping fingers mounted on associated carriers that are rotatable about a common axis, both conjointly and with respect to each other. Each carrier is connected to as associated servo motor, which in turn are connected to a controller for rotating the carriers with respect to each other to grip and release glassware between the fingers, and to rotate the carriers conjointly to index the glassware between apparatus stations. One array of glassware gripping fingers includes coil springs for biasing the fingers toward the fingers of the opposing array for accommodating tolerance variations in the glassware. Drive rollers are located at at least some of the stations, and are pivotal into and out of positions for rotating the containers about their axes for inspection or other purposes.

The object of this invention is to provide a press die for press forming of glass, which is capable of preventing the generation of interdiffusion between a matrix material of press die and a releasing film, making it possible to retain the excellent releasability of the releasing film for a long period of time. Matrix body is covered by a diffusion preventive film, which in turn is covered with a releasing film. In this example, the matrix body is constituted by a sintered body of tungsten carbide (WC) containing 3 wt% of titanium carbide and none of metal-based binder, the diffusion preventive film is constituted by a sputtered film of niobium (Nb) 0.05 micrometer in thickness, and the releasing film is constituted by a sputtered film of an alloy consisting of platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir) 0.3 micrometer in thickness. The diffusion preventive film may be a high-melting point metal such as Ta, Hf, Zr, Re, Ir, Mo, Rh, Ru or Os other than Nb.

A glass or glass-like substrate having a contact-killing, non-leaching antimicrobial effective amount of metal ions contained in at least one surface region thereof, and having a color of b*nullnull6 on the CIE international color scale is disclosed. The antimicrobial substrate is prepared by providing a metal ion precursor comprising at least one source of antimicrobial effective metal ions dissolved or otherwise dispersed in a carrier material; depositing the precursor onto at least one surface of the substrate; drying the substrate at a temperature of from about 20null C. to about 105null C. by removing volatiles from the metal ion precursor; and heating the resulting substrate at a temperature of about 600-650null C. for 2-5 min. to exchange or otherwise implant antimicrobial metal ions from the precursor and into the glass or glass-like substrate.

Said larger glass plate can then be separated into smaller, patterned plates, i.e. the small sheet glass plates (2), whose shape is geometrically determined, by a simple preferably mechanical breaking process. A separation by an abrasive cutting-off process can also be carried out, if the larger sheet glass plate (2) is positioned on a supporting material.
