IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST TO PRODUCE THE CORRESPONDING HYDROPEROXIDE COMPOUNDS, THE IMPROVEMENT WHICH COMPRISES OXIDIZING SAID ALKYL AROMATIC HYDROCAR: BONS HAVING THE FORMULA

    IN WHICH R IS A LOWER ALKYL GROUP HAVING FROM ONE TO SEVEN CARBON ATOMS; R1 IS HYDROGEN OR A LOWER ALKYL GROUP HAVING FROM ONE TO SIX CARBON ATOMS; R AND R1, TAKEN TOGETHER, FORM A CYCLOALKYL RING HAVING FROM FOUR TO SEVEN CARBON ATOMS; AND AR IS PHENYL OR NAPHTHYL, IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST COMPRISING A CUPROUS HALIDE SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF CUPROUS CHLORIDE, CUPROUS BROMIDE, AND CUPROUS IODIDE, AND AN AROMATIC HETEROCYCLIC AMINE SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF PYRIDINE, QUINOLINE, ISOQUINOLINE, TRIAZINE AND PYRAZINE, WHEREIN THE RATIO OF CUPROUS HALIDE TO AMINE IS IN TTHE RANGE OF ABOUT 1 TO 100 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF SAID HALIDE FOR EACH 100 PARTS OF AMINE.
