A water-insoluble copolymer which is composed of (a) from 39.9 to 60% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide or N,N-dimethylmethacrylamide; (b) from 60 to 39.9% by weight of N-alkylated acryl amides or N-alkylated methacryl amides; (c) from 0.1 to 0.7% by weight of a proton-sensitive fluorophore which is covalently bonded to the copolymer; and (d) from 0 to 20% by weight of a diolefinic crosslinking component. The copolymer is used in the form of a membrane on a transparent support material as an optical sensor for ionic strength-independent pH value determination.

Terpolymers based on (meth)acrylamide, hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate and sulfobetaine monomers and their use as thickeners for aqueous salt solutions are described. The terpolymers display their thickening effect within wide concentration and density ranges of the aqueous salt solutions. In addition, their thermal stability is retained also with respect to salt solutions containing calcium chloride and/or calcium bromide and/or zinc bromide.

The main aim of the present invention is a method of preparing photochromic or non-photochromic organic pieces of optical quality and especially organic lenses, by radical polymerisation of a mixture of radically polymerisable monomers, characterised in that it comprises: a) adjusting, by pre-polymerisation, the viscosity of said mixture, to a value between 0.4 and 2 Pa.s; b) pouring said pre-polymerised mixture into a mould; c) photogelifying, in said mould, said pre-polymerised mixture until its gel point; d) completing the polymerisation of said pre-polymerised and gelified mixture in said mould, by heat treatment; adding effective amounts of at least one thermal catalyst and of at least one photoinitiator intervening in said mixture of monomers for the implementation of said pre-polymerisation, photogelification and polymerisation; said photoinitiator(s) intervening in an amount less than or equal to 0.009 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of said mixture of monomers.
