By applying the functional deactivator to rice field soil, the activity of microorganisms, such as sulfur-reducing bacteria, can be activated, thereby accelerating the reduction process of sulfur and iron in soil to facilitate the fixation of cadmium; cadmium adsorption and accumulation in rice is reduced to achieve secure production in fields moderately or lightly polluted by cadmium.

In a method for producing a substrate for soil improvement with water-storing property on the basis of lignin, lignin is provided and oxidized alternatively in an aqueous alkaline or a pH-neutral aqueous suspension, wherein the pH-neutral aqueous suspension after oxidation of the lignin is converted into an alkaline medium. The lignin is cross-linked in an aqueous alkaline medium by multi-functional compounds. Subsequently, the lignin is neutralized, dried, and comminuted. The produced lignin is used as a substrate for improvement of soil properties in that the substrate is used as a water storage that, compared to water storages of non-modified technical lignins, exhibits a significantly higher water adsorption capacity or swelling capacity.

Certain novel formulations of turf additives that act in such a manner as to permit proper amounts of moisture to contact root systems in order to reduce dry spots within highly managed turf areas and/or lawns. The inventive formulation comprising multi-branched surfactant compounds with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic constituents within each branch attached to an oxygen-containing polyfunctional base compound permits effective moisture penetration through such localized dry spots for sustained grass growth therein. Importantly, such multi-branched wetting agents provide sustained moisture penetration over a sustained period of time since the individual branches of such compounds may become dissociated from its base polyfunctional compound. Since such branches include both hydrophobic and hydrophilic constituents themselves, and thus act as wetting agents, even after degradation of the initial surfactant compound, long-term wetting and moisture penetration, at least, are permitted. Methods of treating sandy soils with such compounds and formulations thereof are also contemplated within this invention.

An improved mixture of water-absorbent polymers, including a quantity of small-grained particles, may be injected below-ground where plants are growing or are to be planted, such as by using air-blown, plowblade applicators. In a preferred mixture, 10-20% of the particles are powdery, fine material (such as less than 0.5 mm), and the remainder are larger granules (such as 1-2 mm). The mixture creates a "blanket" of moisture-retaining particles that can surround plant roots. The mixture may be injected by drawing a plowblade through the soil at an appropriate shallow angle and speed to establish a wave in the soil, together with the use of a deflector and control over the air pressure, all of which maximizes underground diffusion and distribution of the injected particles.
