A method for producing a microbial oil includes genetically modifying a labyrinthulid which belongs to the genus Parietichytrium or the genus Schizochytrium by disrupting and/or silencing a Δ4 desaturase gene, a C20 elongase gene, and/or a C18 elongase gene, or by being transformed with an ω3 desaturase gene; culturing the labyrinthulid; and collecting the microbial oil from the labyrinthulid. The labyrinthulid has an activity of synthesizing DHA via a PUFA-PKS pathway in an amount of not more than 1/100 of a total amount of DHA synthesized in the labyrinthulid or no activity of producing PUFAs via the PUFA-PKS pathway, and the labyrinthulid has an activity of producing PUFAs via an endogenous elongase-desaturase pathway.

Disclosed herein are aquafeed, animal feed and fertilizer compositions comprising microalgae enriched with minerals and a method of enriching microalgae with minerals in non-metabolized form. Specifically, the method includes the creation of an enriched microalgae product through the assimilation, reversible chelation, and absorption of supplemental minerals required in the diet of adult fish and other aquatic animals which minimizes leaching of the supplemental minerals before ingestion by the fish. Additionally, the enriched microalgae product can be used as both a direct feed or fertilizer, or as part of an aquafeed, non-aquatic animal feed, or plant fertilizer mixture. The combination and proportion of the minerals can be adjusted to the animal or plant receiving the mineral enriched algae composition.

A method for cultivating and processing microalgae includes directing a continuous supply of carbon dioxide into an enclosed photobioreactor containing microalgae. The enclosed photobioreactor is exposed to insolation for the cultivation of the microalgae by means of controlled photosynthesis chemical reactions. The microalgae are cultivated and the microalgae are processed to create an algae biomass and a gaseous mixture. The algae biomass is extracted to produce an essentially pure algae oil and oil free algae biomass. The gaseous mixture is separated into unreacted carbon dioxide and oxygen. The separated unreacted carbon dioxide is recycled to the photobioreactor and the oxygen in excess of export quantity is stored.
