An overhead door having a variety of sections comprises a first section that includes a contour and a corresponding second section that includes a surface, wherein the surface corresponds to the contour so that as the sectional door follows a track system the surface follows the contour to maintain a joint gap within a particular range between the surface and the contour to prevent or reduce the risk of injury due to the joint gap. A pivot point of a hinge used to secure the first section to the second section is located between the first and second panels. The opposing surfaces of the first and second sections touch the hinge, without causing the hinge to bind when in use.

A pivoting bracket for connecting adjacent panels of an articulated door. The pivoting bracket has a generally cylindrical base and an arm rigidly connected to and extending from the base. The arm has a mounting face on a base side which is generally parallel to a tangent to the base. A recess extends into at least one end of the base, generally co-axially therewith, for receiving a guidewheel shaft. The pivoting bracket interacts with adjacent articulated door panels to mount the panels to a guide track and allow articulated movement without requiring or modifying a conventional hinge. The arm has a first part proximal the base and a second part distal the base. The second part is securable to an upper articulated door panel. The base extends into a channel provided on a rearward face of a lower articulated panel. The base form of the arm pivots and interlocks itself relative to the channel while the door articulates.

A drive mechanism for use with an overhead shaft of a sectional door for raising and lowering the door via a rotation of the overhead shaft. The drive mechanism has a support structure, a first gear, a drive shaft, a second gear, a pocket wheel and an actuator. The second gear is interconnected to the first gear so that a rotation of the second gear is transmitted to the first gear and vice versa. The pocket wheel is operable between first and second positions. The second gear is rotatable along a first direction corresponding to a raising of the sectional door and along an opposite second direction corresponding to a lowering of the sectional door. The actuator is used for rotating the pocket wheel about the drive shaft, operating the pocket wheel between the first and second positions, and driving the second gear along the first and second directions when the pocket wheel is in the second and first positions respectively. The drive mechanism includes a first ratchet assembly for blocking rotation of the second gear along the second direction when the pocket wheel is in the second position. The drive mechanism may also include a second ratchet assembly for blocking rotation of the second gear along the first direction when the pocket wheel is in the first position.

The guiding mechanism includes a guard bracket extending along the doorway and having a mounting segment and a guard segment, and a track extending along the doorway and including a guideway for receiving a roller of the extension member and for guiding the roller as the door moves between blocking and unblocking positions. The track is affixedly mounted to the mounting segment such that the guard segment protects the track from an obstacle during a track impact condition.

Guide track assemblies for upward acting doors include identical vertical and horizontal linear track sections and a curvilinear transition track section. The linear track sections include spaced-apart elongated slots formed at acute angles with respect to the longitudinal extent of the track sections for cooperation with retainer members mounted on angle-shaped jamb brackets. A header bracket also includes one or more retainer members thereon for disposition in similar elongated slots formed in the curvilinear track section. The linear track sections fit in telescoping relationship within enlarged end portions of the curvilinear track section. The configurations of the header brackets, jamb brackets and track sections facilitate quick assembly and easy positional adjustment of the track sections with respect to a door opening covered by a door guided by the track assemblies.

A detent is provided at one end of the adjustable radius members to prevent undesirable travel the garage door. A spacer is provided for use in extension spring configurations when a long horizontal support rail is required. The spacer prevents metal-to-metal contact of moveable sheaves with the horizontal support rails.

Advantageously, the bottom edge of each panel (2) is provided with a tapered lug (11) which, at the end of the rotation during closure of the door, abuts against the inclined flank (10) of the edge of an underneath panel (1). The abutment thus formed ensures the correct vertical alignment of the panels, thereby providing the door with a smooth operation and appearance.
