A reciprocating pneumatic motor for hydraulics has a pair of guide grooves on the inner wall of a cylinder provided, together with a pneumatic piston and a shuttle valve to function pneumatically. The piston has a seal ring which passes the guide grooves to allow air to flow into the shuttle compression chamber, pushing the shuttle valve and opening up a channel for the venting of air. This continuous air flow and venting causes the piston to reciprocate. In addition, the piston is integrated with a ring plate using plastic ultrasound technology which simplifies the structure of the pneumatic motor.

Disclosed is a liquid inertia tool in which the kinetic energy of flowing liquid is converted to useful work by decelerating the liquid flow and directing the inertia force in the water against a movable element in the liquid flowcontaining structure which in turn moves against a work piece. Flow deceleration is achieved by an orifice-effect valve. The valve is reset for flow resumption or acceleration by automatically or selectively applying hydraulic pressure to a reset mechanism. Use of the inertia tool in pile driving and punch press applications is disclosed.

A hydraulic apparatus for generating impacts comprising primary members having striking and control apparatus which is made up of a plunger which moves reciprocatingly, for striking a tool, inside a housing having an intermediate working zone which has a single inner diameter. An intermediate part making up a piston of the plunger fits therein and has a corresponding single diameter. There is no flow of fluid between these two members and the movement of the plunger is controlled by secondary members and tertiary members which are located in respective housings which make up several chambers, and in which the corresponding plungers are reciprocatingly movable. The apparatus further includes means for discharging the fluid under pressure from within the apparatus for stopping its operation when the tool is not at rest on a workpiece so that the main plunger descends inside the housing to a point below its normal lower operating position.

The travel of the valve body is ballistic and the valve remains open for a time determined by a combination of the piston velocity at the initial contact, the distance the valve travels before hitting a stop from which it rebounds elastically toward its seat, the pressure drop across the valve and the mass of the valve. The exhaust valve of the engine may be either internal and actuated by mechanical forces or external, in which case it is actuated by pressure forces. In one embodiment of the invention the stop from which the valve rebounds may be adjustably positioned manually or automatically to control the period of time during which the intake valve is open.

An hydraulically operated striking apparatus for driving a rock drill or the like comprises a body having an axial, generally cylindrical, interior space with an inwardly protruding annular member. A cylindrical piston is positioned in the space in sliding contact with the protruding annular member, and the piston has canal means in its outer surface. The body, the annular member and the piston define two annular spaces and an annular distributing valve is slidably disposed within one of the spaces. The two spaces communicate with each other by means of the piston canal when the piston is in a first slidable position, and the protruding annular member prevents communication between the two spaces when the piston is in a second slidable position. The piston is provided with an axially disposed extension which, in combination with an outlet means, serves to permit a third, annular axial space to communicate with either an inlet means or an outlet means at all times.

Impact tools are described which are capable of developing percussive forces for rock drilling and other repetitive high force applications. A hydroacoustic oscillator contained in such tools includes a hammer and a valve mechanism which is actuated by the hammer for controlling the flow of pressurized fluid so as to establish pressure variations which sustain the oscillation of the hammer. A number of alternative valve mechanisms are disclosed, each including a valve element, the motion of which is controlled by controlling the flow of fluid with respect to the valve element as the hammer and valve element move relative to each other. Such flow control is afforded by chambers defined by the valve element; hydraulic fluid flow with respect to which is controlled so as to determine the deceleration of the valve element and the motion of the element in its actuation by the hammer.
