A storage vessel is filled with compressed gas by filling a first tank with gas from a low pressure gas source. Hydraulic fluid is drawn from a reservoir and pumped into the first tank in contact with the gas. This causes the gas in the first tank to flow into the storage vessel as it fills with hydraulic fluid. At the same time, gas is supplied from the gas source to a second tank. Hydraulic fluid previously introduced into the second tank flows out to the reservoir as the second tank fills with gas. When the first tank is full of hydraulic fluid, a valve switches the cycle so that the hydraulic pump begins pumping hydraulic fluid back into the second tank while the first tank drains. The cycle is repeated until the storage vessel is filled with gas to a desired pressure.

The substrate is provided with a cavity (8) which is formed in an endlessly continuous shape (e.g., circular) to provide a channel for a drive fluid. A cover (9) is positioned above the substrate with the membrane being between the substrate and cover. The cover is provided with an inlet (11) and outlet (10). Electrodes (3, 4) are provided around the floor of the cavity. The electrodes are selectively actuated so as to attract selected areas of the membrane resulting in a gap forming between the cover and the selected areas of the membrane. The areas of the membrane above the non-selected electrodes form a seal with the cover. By selectively actuating the electrodes a peristaltic pumping action results in a pumped fluid traveling from the inlet, through the gaps and out the outlet.

The pressure exchanger has a housing having a body portion; with end elements at opposite ends of the body portion. A rotor is in the body portion of the housing and in substantially sealing contact with the end plates. The rotor has at least one channel extending substantially longitudinally from one end of the rotor to the opposite end of the rotor with an opening at each end. The channels of the rotor are positioned in the rotor for alternate hydraulic communication with 1) high pressure liquid and 2) low pressure liquid, in order to transfer pressure between the high pressure liquid and the low pressure liquid. Because of the high pressures and the high angular velocities, this is a highly cavitation prone structure, In order to prevent cavitation, there are one or more grooves in one or both of the end plates. These grooves bleed pressure out of the channels, for example to a lower pressure channel or to a sealing volume between the end piece and the rotor.

An electro-osmotic pump, for transporting aqueous solutions in micro-fluidics, has a tubular-shaped pumping section which includes a pump tube that is connected in fluid communication with an extension tube. A thread of silica fibers is positioned in the lumen of the pump tube, and an aqueous solution that will interact with the thread is introduced into the pump tube lumen to charge the aqueous solution. In operation, a voltage potential is selectively applied between the pump tube and the extension tube to establish a ground-potential-ground electric field along the pumping section. This creates a force on the charged aqueous solution that moves it through the pump tube and, consequently, also moves fluid through the extension tube. Various embodiments of the electro-osmotic pump are envisioned, including the serial connection of several pumping sections, for use as valves, switches or pumps.
