Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for serial femtosecond crystallography for reducing the vast amount of waste of injected crystals practiced with traditional continuous flow injections. A micrometer-scale 3-D printed water-in-oil droplet generator device includes an oil phase inlet channel, an aqueous phase inlet channel, a droplet flow outlet channel, and two embedded non-contact electrodes. The inlet and outlet channels are connected internally at a junction. The electrodes comprise gallium metal injected within the 3-D printed device. Voltage across the electrodes generates water-in-oil droplets, determines a rate for a series of droplets, or triggers a phase shift in the droplets. An external trigger generates the droplets based on the frequency of an XFEL utilized in droplet detection, thereby synchronizing a series of droplets with x-ray pulses for efficient crystal detection. The generated droplets can be coupled to an SFX with XFEL experiment compatible with common liquid injector such as a GDVN.

Abstract: A fluid ejection head and a method of detecting the presence of fluid in an ejection chamber. The ejection head includes a semiconductor substrate having an elongate fluid supply via etched therethrough. An array of fluid ejectors is disposed adjacent to the fluid supply via, wherein the elongate fluid supply via provides fluid to the array of fluid ejectors for ejection of fluid from the ejection head. Fluid sense cells for the array of fluid ejectors are disposed at each end of the fluid supply via, wherein each of the fluid sense cells has a fluid ejector, an electrode disposed in a fluid chamber for the fluid ejector, and an electrode disposed in a fluid channel associated with a fluid chamber. A fluid detection circuit is provided in electrical communication with each of the fluid sense cells for detecting the presence or absence of fluid in the fluid chamber.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for producing high density cellular arrays. In some embodiments, the methods comprise: providing a sample comprising a plurality of cells; and introducing the plurality of cells in the sample into microwells of a microwell array to produce a cellular array, wherein the microwell array comprises 500 or more microwells per inch2, and wherein 25% or more of the microwells of the cellular array comprise a single cell. The disclosed methods can be used for producing a high density synthetic particle array and a high density reagent array.
