An annular ferromagnetic portion, i.e., "track", of the body to be balanced is rotated adjacent a first electromagnet having a decaying magnetic field which renders that track magnetically homogeneous. Thereafter, a large electrical current of short duration from the discharge of a capacitor is passed through a second, marking electromagnet positioned adjacent that track to produce a high-intensity magnetic pulse. This magnetic pulse produces a very localized spot of permanent magnetization in the track which spot serves as the reference "mark". When the body is then rotated during its balancing operation, that mark will produce an electrical signal each time it passes a magnetic/electric transducer positioned adjacent the rotating track. When the periphery of the body to be balanced consists of a plurality of lands separated by axially aligned slots, the periphery is scanned (while the body is being rotated) and triggering of the discharge current from the capacitor through the marking electromagnet is determined by that scanning to the end that it occurs when one of the lands is immediately adjacent the marking electromagnet.

A peak follower detects the amplitude of the increments between successive peaks of the oscillator output signal. A meter indicates the amplitude of the successive peaks of the oscillator output signal, thereby indicating the amplitude of the first harmonic component of the force variation signal. A circuit which senses the positive-slope zero-crossing of the oscillator output signal is utilized to energize a tire-marking unit, thereby indicating the position of the peak of the first harmonic component.

The mark is printed in the form of a point exactly at a position on the tire which has a peak value in the uniformity including a force variation or run-out. The apparatus comprises a rotary shaft, a first disc member securely mounted on the rotary shaft and carrying a marking means, a second disc freely rotatably mounted on the rotary shaft and adapted to be brought into pressing contact with a tire surface for rotation therewith, and a mechanism for transmitting rotational movement of the second disc member to the first disc member through the rotary shaft upon receipt of a signal from the measuring device for running the marking means at a speed same as the circumferential speed of the rotating tire. The apparatus further includes a means for holding the marking means in its stand-by position.

In a method and apparatus for mass centering of a rotor, the unbalance of the rotor is measured and the result of the unbalance measuring operation and the weight of the rotor are used to determine the position of the axis of inertia which extends through the center of mass of the rotor, with respect to the axis of rotation thereof. The position of the axis of inertia is marked on an end face of the rotor by a marking tool. For that purpose, to bring the position of the axis of inertia and the marking tool into the appropriate relationship, relative displacement is produced by an actuating means as between the rotor and the marking tool in the radial direction with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor, with the rotor or the marking tool being guided in the direction of displacement by a guide means disposed at an angle with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor. The relative displacement produced in that way takes place within a linear region of action of the marking tool, which region extends through the axis of rotation of the rotor. The point at which the axis of inertia passes through the end face of the rotor to be marked by the tool can then be turned into the region of action of the marking tool for the latter to perform the marking operation.
