In conventional systems, once validated, the scanner prints a paper stub that typically includes seat location data. Production of this paper stub can be dispensed with, and the associated data conveyed by the paper stub as well as additional information not contemplated or possible with paper stubs can be conveyed by an electronic stub or e-stub that resides on a device of the attendee, generally the same device employed to present the ticket information.

The method includes one or more processors receiving ticket identification information corresponding to a transportation ticket and vehicle identification information corresponding to a transportation vehicle, wherein the transportation vehicle is associated with a transportation route. The method further includes retrieving a first data entry corresponding to the received ticket identification information. The method further includes retrieving a second data entry corresponding to the received vehicle identification information. The method further includes determining whether the transportation ticket is valid for travel along the transportation route associated with the transportation vehicle based on the retrieved first data entry and the retrieved second data entry. The method further includes generating an output signal that provides an indication of whether the transportation ticket is valid for travel along the transportation route associated with the transportation vehicle.

A ticket dispensing mechanism is disclosed having a housing, a worm and drive, an idler roller, and a drive roller that engages the worm. Rotating the worm rotates the drive roller to advance a strip of tickets placed between the drive roller and the idler roller. A sensor detects ticket movement and a control circuit controls the worm drive motor to rotate the worm until the appropriate number of tickets have been dispensed. A slotted mounting for the drive roller accommodates tickets of different thickness, and locks the tickets against unauthorized withdrawal.

This invention relates to a device adapted to read and erase magnetically encoded information on a ticket or card. A compact self-contained device is provided for attachment to a local utility meter (e.g. electricity meter) or a gas meter. The device comprises a compact casing 10 which is attached to an electrical drive motor 11 which, via roller 9, drives a drive roller 13. The casing 10 includes an entry mouth 18 which leads to a flow path 19 passing between the drive roller 13 and a pinch roller 15 and terminating in an exit mouth 20. Adjacent the entry mouth 18 are sensors 21, adapted to energize the motor 11 when a card is pushed into the entry mouth 18. Similarly adjacent the exit mouth 20 are sensors incorporating switches 22 which may be used to de-energize or reverse the motor. A magnetic read-head 25 is located within the casing 10 and is adapted to read information magnetically recorded on the card or ticket as it flows along the flow path 19. An erase head 23 may also be provided.
