There is provided a driver assist system including one or more image pickup units, a control unit for processing the taken picture, and a monitor for displaying the processed picture. The image pickup unit is so disposed over a corner of the vehicle by directing its optical axis in such a direction that the corner of the vehicle, an external field at least in the vicinity of the corner and infinity may be seen in one display screen.

When beside an obscuring obstruction such as a truck, sport utility vehicle, building, or vegetation beside a driveway, a vehicle operator cannot see if a person or vehicle is approaching from the side into the area about to be entered. Only after moving out partially into the traffic lane will an approaching person or vehicle become visible. This can result in damage and injury. The invention provides the driver of a land vehicle with a view of the roadway ahead and to the side of the vehicle and of the roadway behind and to the side of the vehicle that may not be visible from the driver's position. An electronic viewing element, or elements, of the invention extend beyond the front and/or the rear of the vehicle and view the roadway lateral to the vehicle. Because such apparatus is very vulnerable to damage, provisions are made to retract the element to a protected position within the contour of the vehicle when not in use, and to extend the apparatus to use position as required. The viewing element, or elements, of the invention may take the form of imaging devices. Images produced by the viewing elements are transmitted to display devices that are visible to the driver from the driving position. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the viewing element may be positioned at the forward or rear end of the vehicle contour without actually extending beyond that point. The element is less vulnerable and need not be retracted for protection.

A system and method for integrating traffic light violation related vehicle information with court date scheduling information, which employs one or more digitized video recordings of alleged violations. The system provides end-to-end violation processing using the digitized video recordings of the event, and using vehicle database information, as may for example be provided from a department of motor vehicles (DMV) database. The system potentially also interfaces to a court date scheduling database, which includes indications of various available times at which hearings regarding traffic violations may be scheduled. A user interface may provide a display of one or more perspectives on the violation event, as well as access to the vehicle and court date scheduling database. An evaluator, for example a police officer, uses the interface to 1) view the recorded views of the event, 2) determine whether a citationable violation has occurred, 3) extract any necessary vehicle identification information from the recording, 4) obtain owner information regarding the vehicle from the vehicle database, based on the extracted vehicle identification, 5) generate a citation with regard to the violation, and 6) schedule a hearing date with regard to the violation in response to the available court dates in the court date database.

A video camera mounted on a parking enforcement patrol vehicle and connected to a computer near the operator. The system is driven along a patrol route where parked vehicles are governed by a posted time limit. The system enforces the local parking regulation by automatically determining whether or not each parked car has been parked longer than the posted time limit. Violations are detected by applying a License Plate Recognition algorithm to the images. Each license plate number is time-tagged, geo-referenced and entered into a local database. When the patrol vehicle re-traces the patrol route after the posted parking time limit has expired, the database is searched to flag vehicles that were observed at the same location during the previous circuit and therefore in violation of the parking regulations. When the system detects a parking violation, it prints a parking citation that the operator affixes to the offending parked vehicle.
