A stator winding is divided into segments enabling the stator current to be controlled to flow within a selected portion of the stator winding. The number of nullactivenull turns of the stator winding, that is, the number of turns in which stator current is flowing, determines the motor performance, and thus the speed range over which the motor will operate efficiently. The overall speed range of the motor can be extended by selectively connecting a power supply across one or more segments to thereby dynamically adjust the number of nullactivenull turns of the stator winding. A permanent magnet brushless DC motor incorporating the stator winding of the present invention can be designed having an overall performance characteristic that is similar to that of a series polar direct current motor. It has a higher torque at low speeds, providing good starting and climbing performance of a vehicle incorporating such a motor. The motor can operate efficiently at moderate and high speeds, and can be controlled using a simple control system, thereby enabling simplified operation of an electric vehicle incorporating the motor.

A generator is disclosed, in which connections among winding sets are changed to produce diverse powers different in voltage. A stator is composed of a stator core with teeth to form sequential slots, and many windings wound in the slots. The windings are grouped circumferentially in slot into winding sets, which are wound spaced circumferentially 120 electrical degrees apart to provide a three-phase system of windings. Any one winding set serves producing a low tension applied to automotive electrical system. A controller unit makes terminals of the windings in other winding sets connect in series and/or in parallel thereby producing powers different in voltage. As an alternative, the stator is comprised of an inside cylinder forming one surface of an air gap, a circular toothed member having teeth arranged circumferentially on the inside cylinder to form sequential slots opened radially outwardly of the stator, and an outside cylinder prepared separately from the toothed member then, followed by fit over the toothed member.

A DC motor has a stator that is constituted as a hybrid magnet. The stator has a plurality of electromagnets and permanent magnets that are alternately arranged in the circumferential direction of the stator. Fixed cores of the electromagnets have pole cores that have an approximately arched cross-sectional shape. When direct current is supplied to fixed coils, the pole cores are alternately magnetized to be N- and S-poles in the circumferential direction of the stator. The permanent magnets are anisotropic magnets. The inner surface of the permanent magnet includes a first portion that is arranged in one of both sides in the circumferential direction and magnetized to be an S-pole and a second portion that is arranged in the other of both sides in the circumferential direction and magnetized to be an N-pole. The first portion contacts the pole core that is magnetized to be an S-pole and the second portion contacts the pole core that is magnetized to be an N-pole. Accordingly, the DC motor, which achieves little leakage of magnetic flux and simple constitution, is obtained.

A motor device with an automatically adjustable output torque includes two permanent magnets disposed on an inner surrounding wall surface of a hollow frame body and adapted to produce a first magnetic field, and an armature rotatable between the magnets. The armature includes an armature core having two core segments which are brought to alternately face the magnets respectively when the armature is rotated, and an armature winding adapted to produce a second magnetic field. An output shaft extends from one end of the armature core, and is adapted to drive a wheel of an electromotive vehicle. A commutator is electrically connected to the armature winding, and is rotatable with a mounting shaft extending from the other end of the armature core. Two brush members are connected to a DC power supply, and are disposed to respectively contact two conductive segments of the commutator so as to provide direct current thereto. A regulating winding is disposed on one of the armature core and the magnets to produce a third magnetic field. A controlling member is disposed to control the flow of direct current to the regulating winding to increase or decrease the amount of magnetic flux of the first magnetic field.

An electrical machine with a stator component and a rotor component, wherein the stator component carries the winding of the electrical machine, which has a number of coils. An electronic power unit is provided to control the electrical machine. To obtain an electrical machine, which has a long service life but does not occupy much space, the stator component has two or more separate windings to form two or more electrical sub-machines. The electrical machine can be used to advantage as a starter-generator in commercial vehicles and busses. An improved electrical system is also described.
