A method for producing an ultrathin-wall seamless metal tube, which employs a cold pilger mill of mechatronics drive type including a mechanism to give a feed and a turn angle to a tube material, utilizes a roll having a tapered groove whose diameter gradually increases or gradually decreases from an engaging entry side to a finishing exit side of a pair of rolls, and a tapered mandrel whose diameter similarly gradually increases from the engaging entry side to the finishing exit side to elongate the tube material by reducing a wall thickness while expanding a mid-wall diameter of the tube material. By giving amounts of a turn angle and/or a feed equivalent or nearly equivalent to the forward stroke to the tube material immediately before the start of a backward stroke, it is possible to achieve a further increase in the reduction-rate of rolling, a further reduction of wall thickness, and improvement of dimensional accuracy of the product.

A process for stainless-steel pipe production which comprises piercing rolling a raw material stainless steel containing, by mass, Cr: 10-30%, to give a hollow shell, elongating rolling the hollow shell using a mandrel bar, together with a graphite-free lubricant, to give a finishing rolling blank pipe and heating the blank pipe in a reheating furnace and subjecting the same to finishing rolling by sizing rolling to produce a hot-finished pipe, and then subjecting this pipe as a mother pipe to cold working to produce a stainless-steel pipe. In the reheating furnace, the finishing rolling blank pipe is heated to 1000° C. or more and subjected to heating in which an oxidizing gas is blown into the pipe inside, whereby a stainless-steel pipe which is inhibited from forming a carburized layer in the pipe inner surface can be produced. When the finishing rolling by sizing rolling to give a cold working mother pipe is carried out by stretch reducer rolling at 860-1050° C., an annealing heat treatment of the mother pipe for cold working can be omitted. Thus, a stainless-steel pipe having excellent surface quality can be efficiently produced.

A process for manufacturing a seamless tube which can effectively suppress thickness deviations which are apt to occur in thin-walled seamless tubes is provided. A billet which has been soaked in a beating furnace at a given temperature for a given length of time is subjected to piercing and elongation rolling to form a mother tube, which is then soaked in a reheating furnace at a given temperature for a given length of time and then subjected to sizing to produce a seamless tube with a wall thickness of at most 4 mm. The wall thickness of the tube after sizing is at most 4 mm, the soaking time at the given temperature in the heating furnace is in the range of [billet diameter (mm)×(from 0.14-0.35)] minutes, and the soaking time at the given temperature in the reheating furnace is in the range of [mother tube wall thickness (mm)×(from 3.0-10.0)] minutes.

A piercing mill and cannon exchange method therefor which can automate exchange of a cannon and can cope with flexible production of a variety of differently-sized seamless steel tubes in small quantities. The piercing mill including means for pivoting a cannon holder which holds a cannon and means for sliding the cannon holder along a pass line, through combined above-mentioned means, the cannon holder is pivoted so as to come into alignment with the pass line, is slid along the pass line, and is clamped at a predetermined location. The cannon exchange is characterized in that a cannon holder which retains the cannon in the direction perpendicular to the pass line is pivoted so as to come into alignment with the pass line, is slid along the pass line, and is then clamped to the main frame of the piercing mill. Therefore, it become possible to automate exchange of a cannon in accordance with a changeover and to considerably reduce working hours.
