Each of the multiple function punch assemblies includes an inner or a center punch and an outer or ring-shaped punch surrounding and in sliding contact with the inner punch. The apparatus also includes a die holder for positioning a mass or slug of metal between the punches. A computer system controls movement of the punches and is programmable to form parts of different shapes at a single station.

Moreover, a backward side with respect to the pressing direction has a circular section and its diameter is substantially same as the inner diameter of the container. The metal billet is heated to a temperature suitable for press working and is set into a container for press forming. While a center of a workpiece of the metal billet is being bored by a boring punch to be operated by a pressing machine, the metal billet is hot-dilated so that a bottomed container for a cask is formed.

Apparatus for manufacturing the thin-walled tube includes a punch having a main shank, a punch head and an extruding corner therebetween having the largest diameter of the punch and a die adapted to cooperate with the punch in a single impact extrusion operation, the die having a recess defined by a side surface, a first bottom surface for forming the shoulder section and the border section of the tube and a second bottom surface for forming the nipple section of the tube. An angle is defined between the punch axis and a line tangent to the surface of the punch head at the extruding corner which is in the range of about 130.degree. to about 170.degree.. The punch and die are formed so that upon the punch reaching the end of its stroke wherein it is located within the die recess, the distance between the surface of the punch head and the first bottom surface of the die is greater than the distance between the extruding corner of the punch and the side surface of the die.

A method for warm forging a cup-shaped piece is disclosed. In warm forging a blank is heated between 400.degree. and 800.degree. C. and is inserted within a die having a cross sectional area substantially larger than that of the blank. The ends of the blank are clamped between a recess in the die and a recess in an upsetting punch and the upsetting punch compresses the blank until its sides become sufficiently bulged to almost touch, or touch, the sides of the die. The upsetting punch is then removed and a backward extruding punch is press fitted into the bulged blank and the blank is extruded to form a cup. The extrusion punch is lubricated and cooled by lubricant and coolant applicators at a position remote from the die so that the blank is not prematurely cooled by the coolant.

An indirect extrusion process making use of an apparatus having a main ram and a container which are adapted to be driven independently of each other, the container being moved during the extrusion at a speed equal to or higher than that of the main ram, so as to produce the extrusion force, characterized in that the movement of the container relative to the main ram is prevented so that the power for moving the container may be added to the extrusion force, so as to effect extrusion without causing change in the relative position between the container and the billet during extrusion, and that the main ram and the container are connected at a desired position in accordance with the length of the billet, making use of the frictional force exerted between the container and said billet, such that extrusion may be effected with respect to container and the billet in connected state of operation.
