At least one of a transverse elongation and a longitudinal elongation of a printing material are compensated for. The printing material passes through serially arranged printing couples in a printing press. A component of the transverse elongation is compensated for after passage of the printing material through a first printing couple and before its entry into a second printing couple. This can be accomplished by the use of a framing controller. Alternatively, this transverse elongation can be compensated for by the displacement of at least one printing forme which is situated on a subsequent printing couple. The printing forme can be displaced transverse to a production direction of the printing material, relative to a reference mark on the printing material. An elongation of the printing material, which is known at the time of image generation on a printing forme of a subsequent printing couple can be compensated for by proper configuration or positioning of the printed image on the printing form.

The printing unit comprises plate and blanket cylinders arranged in couples to print on both sides of a paper web passing between each pair of print couples, and an inking system associated with each print couple when the printing unit is in an operative position operable to supply ink to the plate cylinder. Based on the predicted fluctuation characteristic of registration, a control characteristic of the phase between plate cylinders (5, 5, 5, 5) of the individual printing units (4A, 4B, 4C, 4D) is preliminarily set so as to compensate for vertical image misregistration between images printed by the individual printing units (4A, 4B, 4C, 4D), and is stored in a database (32). Then, when the print speed is being changed, from among the plural phase control characteristics thus preliminarily stored in the database (32), a phase control characteristic that corresponds to a printing condition concerning the current printing is selected, and the phase relation between the plate cylinders (5, 5, 5, 5) of the individual printing units (4A, 4B, 4C, 4D) is being modified according to the selected phase control characteristic. Thereby vertical image misregistration can be suppressed and the occurrence of brokes due to the change of print speed can be prevented.

The correction drive motor thus varies the speed of rotation of the plate cylinder relative to the impression cylinder.

A low basis weight, continuously moving substrate is printed by a single substrate, repeat-pass printing process. The continuously moving substrate is passed a first time through the printing station without receiving any pattern directly printed thereon, and is then repeat-passed through the printing station and over a single-passing portion of the substrate. The repeat-pass portion then has an ink pattern directly printed thereon. Ink striking through the directly printed repeat-pass portion of the substrate is collected or absorbed by the underlying single-pass portion of the substrate, thereby preventing ink buildup on the printing apparatus.

Web letterpress equipment is converted to offset lithographic equipment by modification of a driven letterpress impression cylinder to receive an offset blanket, thereby producing an offset blanket cylinder. A letterpress plate cylinder is modified to become an offset plate cylinder with accompanying offset inking and dampening equipment. In one embodiment a drive letterpress plate cylinder of a color hump is packed to become an offset impression cylinder cooperating with the offset blanket cylinder. In a second embodiment the letterpress plate cylinder of the color hump is modified to an offset color plate cylinder and a driven offset impression cylinder is added to cooperate with the offset blanket cylinder. In this manner at least two colors may be offset printed on one side of a web. When used in combination with similarly converted letterpress plate, impression and color hump plate cylinders, at least three colors may be offset printed on one side of a web or multiple colors printed on opposite sides thereof. The press tower is rewebbed to print with proper registration in the bight between the respective offset blanket cylinders and offset impression cylinders.
