摘要: Exemplary practice of the present invention provides a pressure-resistant buoyancy device. An entangled mass of fibers, including shape memory alloy fibers, is positioned inside a three-dimensional enclosure. When inside the enclosure the entangled fibrous mass is attributed with austenitic-phase shape memory, such as by heating. The entangled fibrous mass, thus endowed, exerts an outwardly directed force against the interior wall of the enclosure, thereby structurally reinforcing the buoyancy device and mechanically counteracting an inwardly directed force exerted by ambient fluid upon the buoyancy device, such as by water at greater depths. Exemplary inventive practice affords a buoyancy device that has a light, thin-walled, economical design and yet is highly effective in resisting external pressure. Some inventive embodiments implement an auxetic foam material and/or a fibrous magnetic material, in addition to a fibrous shape memory alloy material.

摘要: A watercraft includes a hull defined by hull frame members. One or more supports extend vertically from at least one hull frame member and above a topline of the hull to define a portion of a compartment of the watercraft, providing structural support for both the hull and the compartment. Other features include an upper deck cover including an integrated drainage system, and a composite hull design improving insulation, buoyancy, water-tightness, and rigidity of the watercraft hull. A method of making a watercraft providing the above features is disclosed.

摘要: A method and arrangement for reducing the weight and optimizing the longitudinal strength of a watercraft, which is especially suitable for transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or other corresponding mediums and comprises a hull, which has a deck extending over at least the main part of the watercraft and a number of substantially spherical cargo tanks arranged successively in the longitudinal direction of the watercraft and a deckhouse, which extends substantially above the said deck. The hull of the watercraft is provided with a continuous protective casing structure known as such and which is arranged on top of the cargo tanks. The said deck of the watercraft is arranged on the hull so that the proportion of its height measured from the bottom of the watercraft to the height of the uppermost continuous portion of the protective casing structure on top of the cargo tanks is at most 0.55, preferably at most 0.5. In addition, said protective casing structure is fixed to said deck and/or other structures supported to the hull and is dimensioned together with the other parts of the hull so that together they constitute an essential part of the overall strength of the watercraft.

摘要: A generally rectangular metallic extrusion (20) for boat hull (21) construction, the extrusion (20) supporting a bottom sheet member (26). The extrusion (20) comprises a number of longitudinal ribs (30) installed upwardly from the bottom sheet, a first longitudinal rib (23) having a generally rounded protruding male joint (22), and a last longitudinal rib (28) having a generally concave female joint (24) mounted to surround the male joint (22) of an adjoinning extrusion (20). The male joint (22) has a recessed neck (39), of the same thickness as the bottom sheet (26), and receives a base (35) of the female joint (24) to form a welding nest. A mounting form is first set and the extrusions laid according to a desired shape. The rotation and adjustment of the protruding male joint (22) in the adjoining concave female joint (24) permits the positioning and meshing of two extrusions (20) at a selected deflection angle, before welding.

摘要: A boat hull is constructed of inner and outer aluminum skin layers. A foam material and a plurality of spaced frame members are sandwiched between the two skin layers. The skin layers are directly welded to the spaced frame members, which preferably are spaced apart at close intervals, to ensure structural integrity and product performance. A preferred method of constructing a boat hull designed according to this invention includes providing a temporary support structure that is connected to longitudinal beams of the boat hull frame. After spaced frame members are connected to the longitudinal beams a first skin layer is attached. The temporary support structure is then removed and the aluminum skin layers are attached to the spaced frame members. A liquid, curable, closed cell foam preferably is injected into the spacing between the skin layers and the spaced frame members.
